### 隨處淨土

> Pure Land Everywhere

有謂吾非不信淨土。亦非薄淨土而不往。但吾所往與人異。東方有佛吾東往。西方有佛吾西往。四維上下。天堂地獄。但有佛處。吾則隨往。非如天台。永明諸求淨土者。必專往西方之極樂世界也。此說語甚高。旨甚深。義甚玄。然不可以訓。經云。譬如弱羽。止可纏枝。則知翮翼既成。身強氣茂。方可翱翔霄漢。橫飛八方耳。非初發菩提心者所能也。世尊示韋提希十六觀法。必先之落日懸鼓。以定志西方。而古德有坐臥不忘西向者。豈不知隨方皆有佛國耶。大解脫人。任意所之。如其不然。恪遵佛敕。

> Some say, "I do not lack faith in the Pure Land, nor do I disdain it as a place to go. But the way I go is different from others. If there is a Buddha in the east, I go east. If there is a Buddha in the west, I go west. To the four corners, above and below, in heaven or in hell—wherever there is a Buddha, I go there. I am not like the followers of Tiantai or Yongming, who seek the Pure Land only by heading west to the Land of Ultimate Bliss." This claim sounds lofty, but understanding it requires depth. The meaning behind it is profound and subtle, yet it cannot serve as a practical guide for us. The scriptures say, "A fledgling bird can only cling to the branches." This shows that only once the feathers are fully grown and the body is strong can it soar through the vast sky, flying freely in all directions. Such an approach is not possible for those who have just begun to develop the aspiration for enlightenment. The World-Honored One taught Queen Vaidehi the sixteen methods of meditative visualization, always beginning with the image of the setting sun hanging like a drum to focus the mind firmly on the West. Moreover, ancient teachers never forgot to face West, whether sitting or lying down. Was it because they did not know that Buddha lands exist in every direction? It is the person of great liberation who can go wherever they wish. If we are not such a person, we must respectfully follow the Buddha's instructions.
