> Delusion of Birth and Rebirth

> An ancient saying goes: “Hearers still fall into confusion upon leaving the womb; Bodhisattvas still grow hazy between lifetimes.” At first, I questioned this: Hearers already possess the six supernatural powers, and Bodhisattvas cultivate both meditation and wisdom—how could they still be subject to confusion? But when I examined my own experience and observed others, I found that events of just last night are already hazy by morning—how much more so the interval between lifetimes? If you move to a different room even for one night, you lose your sense of direction when waking—how much more so when leaving the womb? The confusion of those noble beings is temporary: they haze over briefly but soon become clear, and their dimness soon gives way to awareness. But we ordinary beings remain forever lost in confusion, completely oblivious. The stakes of leaving one body and taking on another are truly this immense. Given this, what we must do now is firmly focus the mind, never letting awareness slip even for an instant. And with utmost sincerity and devotion, we must seek rebirth in the Pure Land. Once reborn there, confusion is no longer a concern. To let the mind wander freely while dismissing the Pure Land—how dangerous that would be!
