### 願力

> Vow Power

呂文正公。每晨興禮佛。祝云。不信三寶者。願弗生我家。願子孫世世食祿護持佛法。後呂氏所出。若公著。若好問。若用中。皆貴顯而奉佛。夫文正亦秪是人。世之善願而竟酬所期。至累世不絕。況求生淨土。為出世間之大願乎。文正之願。取必於子孫者。得否未可知。況求生淨土。取必於自己有乎。故知淨土不成。良以其精誠之未至耳。昔有貴室供養一僧。問僧云。師百年後。肯來某家否。僧一笑。遂為其子。近世總戎范君。亦其父所供僧也。二事正類。夫一時之笑諾。即朵質於豪門。豈得積久之精誠。不托胎於蓮品。因果必然。無容擬議矣。

> Grand Councilor Lü Yizheng conducted a morning Buddhist ritual. He prayed each day: "Let those who do not believe in the Three Treasures never be born into my family. May my descendants, generation after generation, enjoy official salaries and uphold the Dharma." In later generations, Lü's descendants—such as Lü Gongzhu, Lü Haowen, and Lü Yongzhong—all rose to noble positions and remained devoted Buddhists. Lü was but an ordinary person, yet his worldly vow was fulfilled exactly as he wished, spanning multiple generations. How much more powerful, then, is the vow to seek rebirth in the Pure Land—a transcendent, otherworldly aspiration? Lü's vow concerned his descendants, but whether it would be granted was uncertain. The vow to seek the Pure Land concerns one's own self, so its fulfillment is entirely within one's power. Thus, we can see that failure to achieve rebirth in the Pure Land stems solely from a lack of sincere dedication. In former times, a wealthy family once hosted a monk. They asked him, "Master, after your passing, would you be willing to be reborn in our household?" The monk simply smiled, and later he was indeed reborn as their son. In more recent times, General Fan was also the rebirth of a monk his father had once hosted. Both cases are identical. If a single smile or nod can lead to rebirth into a wealthy family, how could prolonged, heartfelt dedication fail to bring about rebirth into a lotus in the Pure Land? The law of cause and effect is inescapable; there is no room for debate.
