### 九品往生

> Nine Grades of Rebirth

土人有薄淨土而不修者。曰。譬如吾輩。當以科名入仕。奈何作歲貢授官耶。一土人云。此喻大謬。蓮臺自分九品。公何不取其最上。而甘作下品乎。今蓮士。科三百。亦可分上中下而九品之也。公何不取彼魁元。而甘作榜尾乎。上品上生。即蓮科之榜首也。故頌之者曰。三心圓發。諦理深明。金臺隨往。即證無生。其在宗門。則大徹大悟。而所謂心空及第歸者。此也。向土人憮然曰。吾疑於是冰泮。

> A certain scholar of modest worldly success looked down on the Pure Land practice, thinking it beneath him. He said, "It's like us scholars who must pass the imperial exams to become officials. Why should we settle for a lesser, annual tribute appointment?" Another scholar replied, "Your analogy is entirely wrong. The Lotus Seat naturally has nine grades. Why don't you aim for the highest, instead of being content with the lowest? Consider the present imperial exams with three hundred successful candidates. They too can be divided into upper, middle, and lower grades—making nine levels in total. Why don't you strive for the top prize, instead of being satisfied with being last? 'Highest grade, highest rebirth' is like being the top scholar in the Lotus Exam. Thus, the praise says: 'With the three minds fully awakened, the truth is deeply understood. The golden platform accompanies you, and you realize birthlessness.' In the Zen tradition, this is called great enlightenment—'the mind is empty, and you return, having passed the exam.'" The first scholar, startled, said, "My doubt has now melted away like ice."
