> Reciting Amitabha's Name One Hundred Thousand Times Day and Night

> A tradition says that Master Yongming chanted the name of Amitabha one hundred thousand times, day and night. I once tried this myself. From the beginning of the first daylight period to the beginning of the next day’s first light, a full twelve hours, I counted one hundred thousand recitations in total. But this was only with the four-character name—“Amitabha.” If I used the six-character version—“Namo Amitabha”—I couldn’t reach that number. I had to chant without any break—even for eating or using the toilet. The slightest pause, and I wouldn’t finish. I had to stop all talking and sleeping. The least slackening, and I couldn’t complete it. I was rushing like a traveler trying to catch up, with no time for slow, mindful recitation. If I slowed down and chanted carefully, I wouldn’t hit the number. So I realized that “one hundred thousand” is just a way of saying, “Never be apart from the Buddha’s name, even for an instant.” It doesn’t have to be exactly that number. I fear that some believers may cling to this figure and turn it into a sickness. That is why I’ve shared my own experiment. Someone may say, “But this is what Master Yongming achieved in deep meditation.” If so, then that is beyond my understanding.
