> Unwilling to Go to the West <note>I</note>

> A monk was once asked, "Do you wish to be reborn in the Pure Land?" He replied, "I do not. What I wish is to be reborn wearing a purple robe, with a wife and a concubine at home. That is my paradise." The questioner fell silent and later told me this. I said, "Each person has their own aspiration. If one's aspiration is wealth and honor, what need is there for the Pure Land? That said, although wealth and honor are not the fine aims of a spiritual practitioner, one still needs to cultivate merit to attain them. If one does not cultivate merit, they may not become a wearer of the purple robe—but instead a wearer of a green robe. They may not be matched with a noble lady from a distinguished family—but instead have to offer the six betrothal gifts to a commoner. What's more, if they have karmic obstacles, they might not even become a wearer of a green robe, but instead become something like a golden-feathered bird—who knows? And they might not even marry a commoner, but instead find themselves dwelling among stable keepers, herders, or butchers—who knows? And if their karma is even heavier, the golden feathers might turn into copper scales—who knows? The stable keepers, herders, and butchers might turn into demon attendants—who knows? How tragic!"
