> Unwilling to Go West<note>2</note>

> The Abbot then asked another monk, "Do you wish to be reborn in the Western Pure Land?" The monk replied, "I do not wish it, but neither do I reject it. If there is a Buddha in the East, I will go to the East. If there is a Buddha in the West, I will go to the West. The same applies to the North, South, above, and below. Why should I fix my mind only on the West?" He then asked a third monk the same question. The monk answered, "Even if the Eight Vajra Guardians carried me to the East, I would not go. Even if the Four Heavenly Kings carried me to the West, I would not leave. How can I even speak of East or West?" Considering all these responses together, the first monk was still immersed in the Five Turbidities (the defiled world). As for these two monks: one spoke of "going along with rebirth," and the other of "no rebirth." However, even the one who spoke of "going along with rebirth" may not truly be the master of his own fate, free from the pull of karma. And the one who spoke of "no rebirth" may not have truly attained the realization of no-birth (the patient acceptance of the non-arising of phenomena) and dwell permanently in the tranquil light of nirvana. If they have not reached such a state, their words are mere idle speculation. If they have not attained it, their bold statements are simply shameless boasting. How difficult it truly is!
