### 出世間大孝

> Transcendent Filial Piety

世間之孝三。出世間之孝一。世間之孝。一者承歡侍綵。而甘旨以養其親。二者登科入仕。而爵祿以榮其親。三者修德勵行。而成聖成賢以顯其親。是三則世間之所謂孝也。出世間之孝。則勸其親齊戒奉道。一心念佛。求願往生。永別四生。長辭六趣。蓮胎托質。親覲彌陀。得不退轉。人子報親。於是為大。予昔甫知入道。而二親云亡。作自傷不孝文以伸悲恨。今見在家出家。而眾中有具慶者。於是倍增感慨。而涕泗交零。稽首頓首以勸。

> There are three kinds of filial piety in the worldly realm, and one kind in the transcendental realm. Worldly filial piety is: First, bringing joy to one's parents through devoted care and offering them the finest delicacies. Second, succeeding in official examinations and holding high office, bringing honor and glory to one's parents through rank and salary. Third, cultivating virtue and practicing diligently, becoming a sage or worthy, thus making one's parents known and respected. These are the three types of filial piety as understood in the world. Transcendental filial piety, on the other hand, means encouraging one's parents to observe purity, follow the Path, and with single-minded devotion recite the Buddha's name, aspiring to be reborn in the Pure Land. There, they will forever leave behind the four modes of birth and escape the six realms of existence. Entrusted in the lotus womb, they will personally see Amitabha Buddha and attain the state of non-retrogression. For a child to repay their parents, this is the greatest way. When I first set foot on the Path, both my parents had already passed away. I wrote an essay lamenting my own lack of filial piety to express my sorrow and regret. Now, seeing those among the laity and monastics who still have both parents alive, I feel all the more moved—tears stream down my face. I bow deeply and earnestly urge:
