> Reciting the Name of the Buddha

> A monk once begged for donations of soybeans from patrons. For every recitation of the Buddha's name, he would pass a bean. One person started this practice, and others followed, calling it the "Bean Buddha" method. But the World-Honored One taught people to recite the Buddha's name using a \*\*recitation beads\*\*, not beans. Why would anyone abandon the Buddha's effortless method and choose this more laborious one? With the beads, one cycle of 108 recitations leads to another, continuing endlessly to hundreds, thousands, millions. With a single bowl of beans, one cycle also leads to another, but its end is also limitless. Yet why discard the beans already recited, never using them again, and instead replace them with new ones? Their reasoning: after counting them up to a bushel or a stone, they send them to monasteries to be made into tofu for offerings. How misguided! Someone might say, "There was an ancient practitioner recorded in \*The Collection of Rebirth in the Pure Land\* who did something similar." But that person wasn't counting beans himself; others estimated his recitations were so numerous they could fill two ship-loads. Large grain ships today can carry a thousand bushels of rice—"two ship-loads" was just a way to describe an immense number. It wasn't the same as today's literal bean-counting. Even if he had counted beans, his intention would not have been like that of these modern practitioners.
