### 簡藏鍊磨

> Refining the Mind Through Simplicity

一儒者謂予曰。吾輩負笈從學。必具束修於師。而助館穀之資於主人。今簡藏僧。覽常住經典。無所助於常住。而安坐受供。又每季得䞋金五錢。此何說也。予笑曰。公猶未知鍊磨期中事乎。一冬之期。先致米一石於常住。而晝夜鞭逼念佛。無斯須停息。仍每日必負薪。或遠在十餘里之外。打七然後暫免。何不移簡藏之供。而供此苦功辦道之行人乎。時僧顛倒。以至於是。處處皆然。吾亦不知其何說也。

> A Confucian scholar once said to me: "When we scholars take on students, we first require them to present a gift of dried meat to the teacher, and also contribute to the host's living expenses. But now, monks who come to browse the monastic library and read the temple's scriptures make no contribution to the monastery at all. They simply sit and receive offerings, and on top of that, get five silver coins every quarter. How do you explain this?" I smiled and replied: "Sir, you are clearly unaware of what happens during the intensive cultivation retreats. For a single winter retreat, a monk must first donate one shi of rice to the monastery. Then, day and night, he is driven to chant the Buddha's name without a moment's pause. He must also carry firewood every day, sometimes from over ten miles away — only during a seven-day meditation retreat is he temporarily exempted. Why not redirect the offerings given to the library browsers to these monks who endure such hardships in their sincere pursuit of the Way? But monks today are so confused that things have come to this — it's the same everywhere. I too don't know how to explain it."
