### 雲棲法彚四十八問答錄出

問。放生魚鳥等。念佛持呪。願彼往生。可往生否。答。罪輕緣熱。承法力亦得往生。罪重緣疏。止滅罪改形善趣。放生呪願之人。福不唐喪。目連度蜂。作盟證。

> Question: If someone releases captive fish or birds and recites the Buddha’s name or mantras, wishing for them to be reborn in the Pure Land, can they actually be reborn there? Answer: If their karmic offense is light and they have strong conditions \[for receiving the teaching\], then through the power of the Dharma they may indeed achieve rebirth. If their karmic offense is heavy and their conditions are weak, the practice will at least purify their offenses and allow them to be reborn in a better realm. The person who releases them and offers blessings will not have wasted their merit. The story of Maudgalyayana liberating the bees is a testament to this.
