### 白鶴

> White Crane

按政和圖經云。鶴有玄黃蒼白。白為最良。穆天子傳云。天子至巨蒐二氏。二氏獻白鶴之血。以飲天子。如尋常白鶴。畜者頗眾。何必以獻至尊。若其獻者。必珍貴異常。世所希有故也。稍有黑毛。非真白鶴。若真白鶴。毛羽純白。不肖兒童時。聞一博古老人所說。高瑞南亦聞之。可證。又引鵞鷺亦白。然此等原不以白為貴。不可以例。如鶴白鸚鵡白龜白鹿白兔白象白。皆以白為貴。世所希有。鶴之純白。正是此類。請更詳之。

> According to the Zhenghe Illustrated Atlas, cranes come in black, yellow, gray, and white, with white being the finest. The Biographies of King Mu of Zhou records that when the king arrived at the lands of the Jusou people, two of their chiefs offered white crane's blood for the king to drink. If ordinary white cranes were common and many people kept them, why would they need to present such a gift to the emperor? If they offered this as a tribute, it must have been something extraordinarily precious and rare in the world, for that very reason. If a crane has even a hint of black feathers, it is not a true white crane. A true white crane has pure white feathers without exception. When I was a child, I heard this from an old man well-versed in ancient matters. Gao Ruinan also heard the same story—this can serve as evidence. Some may cite swans and egrets as also being white, but these creatures are not valued for their whiteness in the same way. They cannot be used as a comparison. Cranes, white parrots, white turtles, white deer, white rabbits, white elephants—all such creatures are prized for their whiteness because they are rare in the world. The pure white crane belongs exactly to this category. I ask you to consider this further.
