> Unheard by ears, unseen by eyes

> The sutra says, "There is not even the name of an evil path." This simply means that one's ears do not hear such a name. It is merely an extreme expression to emphasize that there is absolutely no evil path. If it were said that evil paths must be mentioned, and beings would hear of them, then in that land, beings would actually see cranes and turtles with their own eyes—how could it be only a matter of hearing? Based on this, the text should be amended to read, "Would there still be the reality of evil paths, let alone their names?" Previously, critics objected to the inverted phrasing, not understanding the intended meaning.

> You are a person of extraordinary talent and vast learning—there are few in this land of China who can match you. Now that you have entered the gate of Chan, both Confucians and Buddhists look to you as a standard-bearer, one who can guide the direction of the times. You should not allow yourself to be misled by those who cling to names and forms. Instead, use expansive reasoning to dismantle their narrow views, and the principle of perfect penetration to break their one-sidedness. To cause the true Dharma to shine brightly in this world as a way to repay the kindness of the Buddha—this is your inherent duty. Why, then, would you block the door of Vimalakīrti’s non-duality and compare east and west along winding paths? Why remove the lion throne of the Lamp King and quarrel over the size of a meditation seat? This is not what is expected of the future embodiment of the Golden Grain Immortal. As for someone like myself, who does not seek the position of a Dharma master, does not desire the title of a spiritual guide, and does not crave the reverence of the fourfold assembly—even if the whole world slanders me, even if my writings are used to cover sauce jars or fuel the fire, I will simply let it be.
