> No. 1170-C Pure Land Doubts Clarified: Preface

豫章微休居士　陳　所蘊　撰

蓮池禪師作淨土疑辨。摧慢幢。破癡網。如闇得燈。如貧得寶。真渡苦海之慈航哉。即天台永明之論。未有若此之精切而著明者也。修淨土者。最宜服膺。或疑末後戒彼恣意妄談。貽苦報於無盡。其言得無己甚乎。余曰。非己甚也。甞考唐房翥暴卒。至冥間見王。王曰。據案簿。君曾勸一老人念佛。已生淨土。君承此福。亦合生淨土。遂放還呂。師證云。闡提之輩。不信有西方。不能自修。又障他人修。入地獄如箭射。夫一口業也。勸人念佛。亦令生淨土。障人念佛。入地獄如箭射。恣口業者。其真可懼也哉。故曰蓮池禪師之言。非己甚也。

> Master Lianchi wrote "Resolving Doubts about the Pure Land." It shatters the banner of pride, breaks through the net of delusion, like lighting a lamp in darkness, like discovering a treasure in poverty—truly a compassionate vessel for crossing the sea of suffering! Even the writings of Tiantai or Yongming have not been so precise and clear. Those who cultivate the Pure Land practice should hold this teaching close. Some may question whether the text's final warnings against reckless speech and its talk of endless suffering are too harsh. I say: Not at all. I once examined the story of Tang Fangxu, who died suddenly and appeared before the King in the underworld. The King said, "According to the records, you once encouraged an elderly person to recite the Buddha's name. They have already been reborn in the Pure Land. Because of this merit, you too should be reborn there." So he was released and returned to life. Master Lü testified: "People of extreme wrong views who neither believe in the Western Pure Land nor cultivate themselves, and who obstruct others from doing so, fall into hell as swiftly as an arrow shot." Look at it—just one use of speech. Encouraging others to recite the Buddha's name leads them to rebirth in the Pure Land. Obstructing that practice leads to a fall into hell as swift as an arrow. Those who casually indulge their speech should truly be afraid! Therefore, I say that Master Lianchi's words were not harsh at all.
