The Sutra on the Brahmin Who Sought to Avoid Death, Spoken by the Buddha, was translated by the Eastern Han dynasty translator An Shigao and is one of the early Buddhist scriptures transmitted to China. An Shigao was active in the second century, and his translations hold foundational significance for the formation of Chinese Buddhism. This sutra is brief in length, using the story of a Brahmin who attempted to evade death but ultimately failed to elucidate the core Buddhist teachings of the impermanence of all conditioned phenomena and the suffering inherent in all birth. It emphasizes that birth and death are unavoidable, and only by cultivating the right path can one attain liberation. As an early Chinese-translated Buddhist scripture, it provides important textual material for studying the thought and translation style of Buddhism during its initial transmission period in China, occupying a significant place in Buddhist history.

佛說婆羅門避死經
後漢安息沙門安世高譯

Translated by An Shigao, Parthian Monk of the Later Han Dynasty

At one time, the Bhagavan was staying in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in the city of Shravasti. Then, the World-Honored One addressed the bhikkhus:

"In the past, there were four Brahmin sages who diligently practiced wholesome dharmas and attained the five supernormal powers, yet they constantly feared death. These four Brahmin sages, diligently cultivating wholesome dharmas and possessing the five supernormal powers, thought to themselves: 'Where can we dwell to exist forever in this world?'

Then, one of those Brahmins, who diligently practiced wholesome dharmas and possessed great spiritual power and the five supernormal powers, entered into the sky, thinking, 'Here there will be no death.' But that one who entered the sky passed away.

The second Brahmin, diligently practicing wholesome dharmas and possessing the five supernormal powers, fearing death, entered into the great ocean, thinking, 'In the ocean, there will be no death.' Yet he too passed away in the ocean.

The third Brahmin, diligently practicing wholesome dharmas and possessing great majestic power and the five supernormal powers, fearing death, entered into the heart of a mountain. Right there, he met his end.

The fourth Brahmin, diligently practicing wholesome dharmas and possessing the five supernormal powers and great majestic power, fearing death, entered into the earth, thinking, 'There I shall escape death.' But he too passed away within the earth."

「時世尊以天眼見清淨無瑕,觀彼四婆羅門精進修善法,有大威勢五通畏死,一人處虛空於彼命過,一人入海亦於彼命過,一人入山腹於彼命過,一人入地於彼命過。爾時,世尊見彼四婆羅門精進修善法五通有大威勢,便說偈言:
「非空非海中, 非入山石間,
無有地方所, 脫之不受死。」
爾時,比丘聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。
