Buddha Speaks the Dharani Sutra for Rescuing Flaming-Mouth Hungry Ghosts
Translated by the Monk Bukong, Tripitaka Master of Daxingshan Temple, with the Titles of Kaifu Yitong Sans
At that time, the World-Honored One was in the Samghārāma of Nyagrodha in Kapilavastu, surrounded by an assembly of monks, bodhisattvas, and countless beings, as he taught the Dharma.
At that time, Ananda was sitting alone in a quiet place, reflecting on the teachings he had received. Then, after midnight, in the third watch of the night, he saw a hungry ghost named "Flaming Mouth." Its form was hideous, its body withered and thin. Fire blazed from its mouth, its throat was as narrow as a needle's point, its hair was tangled and disheveled, and its claws and teeth were long and sharp—utterly terrifying. It stood before Ananda and said to him: "In three days' time, your life will come to an end, and you will be reborn among the hungry ghosts."
At that time, Ananda, upon hearing these words, was filled with fear and alarm. He asked the hungry ghost, "If after I die I am reborn as a hungry ghost, what means may I employ to escape this suffering?"
Then the hungry ghost said to Ananda: "If tomorrow you can give offerings of food to a hundred thousand nayutas of hungry ghosts—as countless as the sands of the Ganges—along with a hundred thousand Brahmin immortals, each receiving a full measure of food as used in the land of Magadha, and if you also make offerings to the Three Jewels on my behalf, then you will gain extended life, and I will be freed from the suffering of the hungry ghost realm and be reborn in heaven."
Ananda saw the Hungry Ghost of the Flaming Mouth—his body thin and wasted, scorched and utterly hideous, flames rising from his mouth, his throat as thin as a needle's point, hair disheveled, nails and claws long and sharp. He also heard such unfriendly words and was seized with great terror, every hair on his body standing on end. He immediately rose from his seat, hastened to where the Buddha was, prostrated himself with all five limbs touching the ground, and bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, his body trembling as he said to the Buddha: "Please save me from this suffering! Why? Because when I sat in a quiet place, reflecting on the Dharma I had received, I saw this Hungry Ghost of the Flaming Mouth, who spoke to me, saying: 'Within three days' time, your life will certainly come to an end, and you will be reborn among the hungry ghosts.' I then asked him: 'How can I be spared from this suffering?' The hungry ghost replied: 'If, right now, you can offer food and drink of every kind to hundreds of thousands of nayutas of hungry ghosts as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, as well as to hundreds of thousands of Brahmin sages and the like, you will have your life extended in this way.' World-Honored One! How am I now supposed to provide such food to all those hungry ghosts and sages?"
At that time, the World-Honored One said to Ananda, "Do not be afraid! I have a skillful means that will allow you to offer various kinds of food and drink to countless hungry ghosts—as many as the sands of hundreds of thousands of rivers—as well as to the Brahmins and celestial sages. Do not worry or feel troubled."
The Buddha told Ananda, "There is a sacred spell called 'Unlimited Majesty, Ease, Radiance, and Wondrous Power.' Whoever recites this spell will be able to provide fine food and drink in abundance to countless hungry ghosts—as many as the sands of the Ganges, multiplied by billions—as well as to Brahmin sages and others. Every single one of these beings will receive seventy-seven full measures of food, using the standard measure of the kingdom of Magadha.
Ananda, in a past life, I was a Brahmin. I received this spell from the Bodhisattva Guanyin and from the Thus-Come One of Worldly Ease and Majesty. Through its power, I was able to distribute all kinds of food and drink to countless hungry ghosts and sages. This allowed those hungry ghosts to be freed from their suffering bodies and to be reborn in heaven.
Ananda, embrace and uphold this spell now, and your merit, fortune, and lifespan will all grow and expand."
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke this dharani to Ananda:
"Homage to all the Tathagatas, to Avalokitesvara. Om, Sambhara, Sambhara, Hum."
The Buddha said to Ananda: "If there are good men or good women who wish for longevity, increased merit and prosperity, and who wish to quickly fulfill the perfection of giving (Dana Paramita), they should, every morning and at all times, without any obstacles, take a clean vessel, fill it with clean water, place a small amount of rice and various cakes or food in it, cover the vessel with their right hand, recite the aforementioned Dharani seven times, and then invoke the names of the four Tathagatas:
Namo Bhagavate Prabhūtaratnāya Tathāgatāya (This refers to the Many Treasures Tathāgata).
By calling upon the name of Many Treasures Tathāgata, the blessings of his name can shatter the deep-rooted miserliness and negative karma that ghosts and spirits have accumulated over countless lifetimes, allowing them to attain perfect merit and virtue.
Namo Bhagavate Surūpāya Tathāgatāya (This means: Homage to the Thus-Come One of Wondrous Form Body)
Through the blessings that come from reciting the name of the Tathāgata of Wondrous Beautiful Form, all the ugly and terrifying appearances of ghosts are broken, and one is immediately endowed with complete and perfect features.
Namo Bhagavate Vipula Gatra Tathagataya (This is known as the Tathagata of Vast and Expansive Body)
Because of the blessing power of reciting the name of the Tathāgata of Vast Body, all hungry ghosts will have their throats widened, and the food offered to them will satisfy them fully and freely.
Namo Bhagavate Abhayamkara Tathagataya (This means "Thus Come One, the One Free from Fear")
"Through the blessings of the Thus Gone One, the one known as 'Free from Fear,' who has departed from all terror, all fears of ghosts and spirits are completely eradicated, and they are liberated from the realm of hungry ghosts."
The Buddha said to Ananda, "If a good man or woman from a virtuous family, after reciting the names of the four Tathagatas with reverence, snaps their fingers seven times, takes up their food vessel, and on clean ground, extends their arm and pours out the food — once this offering is made, in all four directions, hundreds of thousands of millions of hungry ghosts, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, will each receive a full measure of food from Magadha, enough to fill seventy-seven large containers. After they consume this food, they are all satisfied and full. These ghosts, having taken this meal, all abandon their ghostly forms and are reborn in the heavens."
Ananda! If there are monks, nuns, laymen, or laywomen who constantly use this secret mantra and the names of the four Tathagatas to bless food and offer it to hungry ghosts, they will be filled with immeasurable merit. This is equal to making offerings to hundreds of thousands of millions of Tathagatas—there is no difference whatsoever. Their lifespan will be extended, their appearance and strength enhanced, and their wholesome roots fully complete. All non-human beings, yakshas, rakshasas, and evil spirits will not dare to harm them. Moreover, they will accomplish immeasurable merit and longevity.
If you wish to make offerings to the celestial Brahmin sages, fill a vessel with pure food and drink, and recite the sacred mantra over it twenty-one times. Then pour it into clean, flowing water. By doing so, you will be offering the finest celestial delicacies to countless Brahmin sages—as numerous as the sands of a hundred thousand Ganges rivers. Blessed by the power of the mantra, these sages will each fulfill their deepest aspirations and accumulate virtuous merit. At that moment, they will all make this vow: "May the one who offers this food enjoy a long life, radiant health, and peace of mind. May they see and hear with clear understanding and pure wisdom, embodying the majesty of the Brahma Heaven and walking the path of the Brahma conduct. May they also gain the merit of making offerings to countless Tathagatas, and may no enemy or obstacle ever harm them."
"If monks, nuns, laymen, or laywomen wish to make offerings to the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha, they should use incense, flowers, and pure food and drink. Recite the secret mantra above twenty-one times, then present the offerings to the Three Jewels. Such good men and women will thus be offering heavenly delicacies and fine tastes to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha throughout the ten directions. This also constitutes praise, requests for teaching, and rejoicing in merits. They will always be remembered and praised by all Buddhas, and all heavenly beings and virtuous spirits will constantly come to protect them. In this way, they fully accomplish the perfection of giving (Dāna Pāramitā)."
"Ananda, listen to my words and practice accordingly. Spread this teaching far and wide, so that all beings may hear and see it, and gain infinite merit. This is called the 'Dharani Sutra for Rescuing Hungry Ghosts and Suffering Beings.' Keep this name and uphold it with devotion."
When the entire assembly and Ananda heard what the Buddha taught, they accepted it with single-minded faith and joyfully put it into practice.
