The Sutra of Various Parables was compiled by the monk Daolüe during the Later Qin dynasty and stands as an important early collection of parable-style scriptures in Chinese Buddhism. Through vivid allegorical stories and metaphorical techniques, this sutra elucidates teachings on karma and retribution, methods of spiritual practice, and the emptiness of wisdom. Its content is both accessible and rich in philosophical insight. The background of its composition is closely tied to the need for adapting Buddhist teachings to Chinese culture during the early spread of Buddhism to the East, blending ancient Indian Buddhist thought with Chinese narrative traditions. As a key text for studying early Buddhist literature and the dissemination of doctrine, it holds a significant place in the history of Buddhist literature and laid the foundation for the development of Mahayana parable literature, profoundly influencing later Chan Buddhist koans and folk Buddhist stories.
