> Shi Minglong, a native of Suqian, Huainan, was the son of the Yao family. His secular name was Dongyang. In his youth, he studied as a scholar in the local county academy. He was fond of self-cultivation and had a deep interest in Buddhist scriptures. For twenty years, he paid no attention to family affairs. He often associated with virtuous teachers and friends. During the first year of the Longqing era, he lived as a layman in a tranquil manner. He traveled north to visit famous monasteries and seek out virtuous elders. He resided in Qingyuan for three years, then climbed Yinshan to the Fahua Temple, where he received ordination under the great monk Daguang and took the full precepts. Later, he lived at Xiufeng Hermitage on Yangshan, and his reputation for virtue grew day by day. He wore a worn-out robe, with no upper garment, no shoes, and he visited the imperial tombs. Many wealthy patrons offered him alms, but he paid them no heed. He arranged for seventy-two people to undertake a thousand-day retreat, personally expounding the Dharma and elucidating the teachings of the three traditions. At that time, the Minister of War, Wang Daokun of Xiuning, respected him greatly.

> An imperial decree was issued to inspect the border. As he traveled, he came to the various tombs and arrived at the Fahua Temple, which was the military governor's headquarters. Hearing of the master's great virtue, he hastened to visit. A novice monk came to greet him and saw the master in a patched robe that barely covered his body, yet the bitter cold could not harm him. Wang and the governor stepped aside from their seats and paid respects to him. They brought him into a cave, where he sat on a stone bed and spoke with them. The master briefly pointed to the meaning of the coming of the West. The governor was deeply moved and believed. Wang asked, "After a thousand days, can you establish a permanent monastery here?" The master replied, "There is no permanence, and no abiding." The next day, he took his leave and returned. Ten or more days later, on the day of the Beginning of Spring, a five-colored light shone from Yang Mountain. Another seven days passed, and on New Year's Eve he gathered the assembly and said, "On the first day of the first month of the new year, I will depart. Those among you who can read should listen to the sutras with your ears; those who cannot read should chant the Buddha's name with your heart. Devote yourselves to meditative concentration and wisdom, and cultivate a universal heart for the benefit of all. This itself is the Buddha — do not seek elsewhere. Strive on, all of you." On New Year's Eve, after midnight, he asked his disciples to look at the stars and said, "Is it midnight yet?" They said, "It is midnight." The master said, "Not yet. I will depart at noon." On the first day of the new year, the five-colored light shone again from Yang Mountain, just as before. At noon, the master took leave of the assembly and passed into still meditation. Seven days later, at cremation, the light shone again, just as before. The assembly and all the high officials, gazing upon the light, bowed in a circle toward the master, saying, "Buddha! Buddha! May this light shine upon all the world below." Then the relics appeared in abundance. The governor had a stupa built to enshrine them, and Master Wang wrote the inscription. This was in the first month of the first year of the Wanli era.
