### 成都府信相寺沙門釋宗顯傳十二

> Transmission by the Monk Shi Zongxian of Xinxiang Temple, Chengdu Prefecture, Section 12

釋宗顯號正覺。潼川王氏子也。少選為進士有聲。甞晝掬溪水為戲。至夜思之遂見水泠然盈室。欲汲之不可得。忽爾塵境自空歎曰。吾世網裂矣。往依昭覺白公得度。蕭然一衲隨眾咨參。一日白公問。高高峯頂立深深海底行作麼生會。忽於言下頓悟曰。釘殺脚跟也。白拈起拂子曰。這箇又作麼生。顯一笑而出。服勤七祀。出遊至京都淮淛遍歷叢林。晚登五祖見演和尚問。未知關棙子。難過趙州橋。如何是關棙子。祖曰。汝且在門外立。顯進步一踏而退。祖曰。許多時茶飯元來也有人知滋味。明日入室。祖見顯便問。是昨日問話僧否。我固知爾見處。秖未過得白雲關在。顯珍重便出。時圓悟為侍者。乃以白雲關意扣悟。悟曰。直下會取。顯笑曰。我不是不會。祇是未諳。待見這老漢共伊理會一上耳。次日祖往舒城。顯與悟繼往。適會於興化。祖問記得曾在那裏相見來。顯曰。全火秖候。祖顧悟曰。這漢饒舌。後遊廬山回舉高高峯頂立話所得之意。白五祖。祖曰。吾甞以此事詰先師。先師曰。我曾問遠和尚。遠曰。猫有歃血之功。虎有起屍之德。非索達本源不能到也。顯侍之久。祖鍾愛之。辭返蜀祖為小參。復送之以頌曰。離鄉四十餘年。一時忘却蜀語。禪人回到成都。切須記取魯語。顯歸昭覺。白公尚無恙。再侍之聲譽藹然。初出住長松。次主保福。大張爐鞴。煅煉四方學者。故龍象多出其輪下焉。

> The Ch'an Master Zongxian, who later received the title Zhengyue, was a native of Tongchuan from the Wang family. In his youth, he excelled as a scholar and gained recognition. Once, while playing with stream water during the day, he reflected on it at night and saw the water filling his room in a cold, clear vision. When he tried to draw from it, he could not. Suddenly, the dusty worldly realm emptied itself, and he sighed, saying, "The net of my worldly life is torn apart." He went to seek ordination under Master Zhaojue Bai. He lived simply in a single robe, joining others in seeking instruction. One day, Master Bai asked, "Standing atop the highest peak, walking along the deepest sea floor—how do you understand this?" At that moment, Zongxian was suddenly enlightened and said, "My heels are nailed to the ground!" Master Bai picked up his whisk and asked, "What about this?" Zongxian laughed and left. He served diligently for seven years. Later, he traveled to the capital and the regions of Huai and Zhe, visiting numerous monasteries. Eventually, he climbed Mount Wu and met Master Yan. He asked, "Without understanding the key mechanism, it's hard to cross Zhaozhou Bridge. What is the key mechanism?" Master Yan replied, "Stand outside the gate for now." Zongxian stepped forward, stamped his foot, and retreated. Master Yan said, "After all this time, at last someone knows the flavor of tea and rice." The next day, when Zongxian entered the master's quarters, Master Yan saw him and asked, "Are you the one who asked about the key mechanism yesterday? I've always known where you see, but you haven't yet passed Baiyun Pass." Zongxian respectfully took leave and left. At that time, Yuanwu was serving as attendant. Zongxian shared his thoughts about Baiyun Pass with Yuanwu, who said, "Apprehend it directly." Zongxian smiled and said, "It's not that I don't understand—I just haven't fully grasped it. I'll wait to sort it out with the old fellow himself." The next day, Master Yan traveled to Shucheng, with Zongxian and Yuanwu following. They met by chance at Xinghua Temple. Master Yan asked, "Do you remember where we met before?" Zongxian replied, "A full blaze awaits your command." Master Yan turned to Yuanwu and said, "This fellow talks too much." Later, after returning from Mount Lu, Zongxian recounted the meaning he had gained from the teaching "Standing atop the highest peak" to Master Yan. Master Yan said, "I once challenged my late teacher with this matter. My late teacher said, 'I once asked Master Yuan. Master Yuan said: A cat has the merit of lapping blood; a tiger has the virtue of raising the dead. Unless one has traced the source, one cannot reach this.'" Zongxian attended Master Yan for a long time, and the master held him in deep affection. When Zongxian took leave to return to Shu, Master Yan held a brief teaching session and sent him off with a verse: "Leaving home for over forty years," "One forgets the Shu dialect in time." "Ch'an person returning to Chengdu," "Be sure to remember this rhyme." Zongxian returned to Zhaojue Temple. Master Bai was still alive and well, and Zongxian served him again, his reputation flourishing. He first led the Changsong Temple, then served as abbot of Baofu Temple. There he stoked the great forge and bellows, tempering students from all directions, so that many dragons and elephants emerged from under his wheel.
