The Scripture of the Wordless Precious Casket is an important Buddhist sutra translated during the Yuan-Wei period by the North Indian monk Bodhiruci. This scripture belongs to the Tathāgatagarbha class of texts, taking the wordless Dharma-gate as its core, expounding the profound meaning that all dharmas are originally without words, transcending speech and form, yet encompassing the boundless teachings. Through dialogues between the Buddha and Subhūti, the sutra emphasizes the inherent purity of the mind-nature and the idea that all beings inherently possess Buddhahood. This scripture holds a lofty position in Chinese Buddhism, exerting a profound influence on the later Chan school’s principle of “not establishing words and letters, directly pointing to the mind to see one’s true nature.” It provides crucial basis for the study of Buddhist mind-nature theory and the view of spiritual practice.

Sutra of the Wordless Treasure

This is what I heard:

Once, the Bhagavan dwelt in the great city of Rajagriha, on Vulture Peak. At that time, countless hundreds of thousands of millions of great Bodhisattvas surrounded the Tathagata. All were of great wisdom, skilled in expedient means, brave and diligent. They were adept at penetrating the teaching of no-words, and skilled at purifying what is proper and improper. Covered by the net of shame and liberation, they had tamed their faculties. With compassion and shame as their sharp tools, they compassionately cared for all beings. They had attained the great samadhi, took wisdom as their guide, and revered their wise mother. They were like a treasure island, a treasury of great jewels. They all understood well what is wholesome and unwholesome, knew the affairs of the three times, and had fully achieved everything. They possessed eloquence on the teaching of no-words, understood the two kinds of Emptiness, and attained the sublime and excellent stage. They deeply studied all truths and realized the ultimate reality. Boundless and fearless, they were attached to nothing. They completely understood the true nature of reality, and were skilled at contemplating the two teachings of real and unreal. They appeared to be born in a womb, yet had forever left birth and death. They were aware of secrets, knew all signs, protected lands, and had great fame. All had attained the supreme and excellent treasury, the wordless treasury, and rested in peaceful stillness. Everything they did was good and joyful. Their names were universally known; they had left the three realms. They could rescue beings dwelling in the three realms. They were aware of Thusness, and universally manifested Samantabhadra. They revealed their bodies everywhere, with pure faculties, and were skilled at understanding their own and others' bodies. All had achieved bright and sharp wisdom.

These Bodhisattvas were: Sarvanirghosa, Dharmanirghosa, Varapradana, Dharmacaksu, Sahasralaksana, Pratibhanakuta, Sumati, Bhumivardhana, Bhumikotiparishuddha, Gambhirabhuminirghosa, Bhumighosa, Pratisamvit, Utpalavarna, Utpalaksi, Utpalakarnika, Sikhin, and Manjusuri. Such Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas were uncountable, all serving as crown princes awaiting the Dharma-king's throne. All were youths, having gathered from infinite worlds, as countless as the sands of the Ganges.

Surrounded by countless Shakra and Brahma kings, was the bodhisattva Surashcinta (Superior Contemplation). Surrounded by Samantabhadra (Universal Virtue), Akashagarbha (Space Treasury), the four great Heavenly Kings, and countless wheel-turning sage kings, was a host. Surrounded by Mahasthamaprapta (Great Might Attained) and Guanshiyin (Regarder of the Cries of the World), along with countless Brahma multitudes, was another. Surrounded by many Vaisravana (Hearer of Many Teachings) kings and countless others, was Aniketadharin (Holder of No Fixed Views). Surrounded by countless constellations and other world-protectors, was the bodhisattva Constellation King. Then there were the bodhisattva Doubt-Destroyer and the bodhisattva Destroyer of All Obstructions, who manifested themselves in the bodies of Tathagatas, surrounded by countless Buddhas; and also Shariputra, Mahamaudgalyayana, Mahakashyapa, and others, all of whom were great Arhats. True meditators, and the bodhisattva Surashcinta (Superior Contemplation), were surrounded by countless heavenly maidens. The bodhisattva Bhaisajyaraja (Medicine King) and the bodhisattva Bhaisajyasamudgata (Medicine Superior) were surrounded by countless followers.
