Five Hundred Disciples Sutra (佛五百弟子自說本起經)

Chapter 6: The Wheel Treatise (Eleven verses clarifying what was heard)

"At the time of Buddha Vipaśyin, in the land of Pāṇḍumāna, I established a dwelling for the four-directional Sangha. With beds and bedding as well, I gave it all in generosity, and with a joyful heart, I made this vow at that very time: 'Seeing the Perfectly Enlightened One, may I become a renunciant, and reach the unexcelled unconditioned, the cool state of true cessation of suffering.' Because of this root of merit, for ninety-one kalpas I dwelt in peace, and gained the natural vision that comes from being among celestial beings and in the human world. As for the remaining merit and blessing, in this present final life I was born into the household of the elder Aṅgulimāla(?), proud and noble, with no brothers. Born, I was cherished by my father, and at once heard his spoken instruction: 'I give my son away,' — with treasures in many thousands of kinds. On the soles of my feet grew extraordinary hairs, naturally four inches long; my body is soft and fair, secure and free from harm. Throughout the past ninety kalpas, again and again the same, I did not know or remember my own body when lifting my foot to tread the ground. Now in this final life, I have again obtained a human body, and accomplished the unattached, the cool state of cessation of suffering. The Buddha sees and declares of me: 'Foremost in diligence, honored above all, liberated, with defilements exhausted, having attained the immovable phrase.'" Thus the son of the Koḷiya clan, in the midst of the Sangha assembly, at Lake Anavatapta, himself declared his former merit.
