> Daily sitting meditation: When the hall manager reports to the abbot and the head monk, strike the board in front of the monastics' hall three times, then strike the board in front of the sleeping hall. The monastics enter the hall and sit down. Once seated, strike the board in front of the head monk's room three times. The head monk enters the hall, offers incense, and walks one full circuit around the hall. As soon as the fire board sounds, the head monk rises first, and others may act freely. After the midday meal, continue practice at one's own pace, sitting in meditation as desired. For the fourth watch sitting meditation, see the "Entering the Monastic Community" chapter. When the evening bell rings, enter the hall. At the fixed bell, rise and go to the restroom. By the second mark of the second watch, lay down the pillow and rest. When the evening bell sounds, everyone enters the hall. At the first segment of the bell, the head monk enters the hall. At the third segment, the abbot enters the hall. Only after the bell has ceased completely does the circuit of the hall begin. If the abbot has not yet arrived or is absent, the head monk conducts the circuit. For the fourth watch, first the head monk circuits, then the abbot arrives and circuits. In "dry" meditation, the sitting board is not used. Always investigate thoroughly. During the three day-watches and three night-watches, keep the body and mind collected, and thoroughly penetrate the great matter.
