Chapter 8: The Dragon King Receives Prophecy

At that time, the dragon kings Nanda and Upananda, along with their retinue of ninety kotis of dragons, saw that the dragon maidens had made offerings to the Tathāgata and received the prophecy. Their minds and bodies were at ease, experiencing an unprecedented joy, and they praised the Tathāgata, saying:

"The Tathāgata perfectly embodies vast power and great virtue, with unimpeded spiritual penetration. He knows the thoughts in the minds of all beings, hears and is fully aware of all their deeds, and personally realizes and understands everything without exception. Moreover, due to his great compassion, the Tathāgata preaches the Dharma whether he is invited or not—even when the time is not opportune—all for the purpose of teaching and transforming beings, ripening them, freeing them from the heat of afflictions, and helping them attain the joy of Nirvāṇa. He teaches in accordance with their capacities and invariably ensures they achieve results. Even women, whose minds are unsettled and whose natures are dominated by desire, anger, and ignorance—who cannot grasp the essential points when they hear the Dharma—are nevertheless transformed by the Tathāgata. Since even those sixty kotis of dragon maidens obtained the prophecy, how could we not receive its blessings?"

Then, having spoken these words, the Dragon King, filled with a sense of having encountered something supremely rare by being in the World-Honored One’s presence, used his miraculous power to create a vast and fragrant cloud. This cloud filled the entire Jambudvipa continent, covering all mountains and seas. He then rained down countless fragrant waters and sandalwood powders, whose scent spread far throughout all Buddha worlds.

Furthermore, within the city of Kapilavastu, he rained down red pearls until they piled up to knee height, covering an area sixty yojanas in length and width. Then, in the Nyagrodha forest, he scattered countless Dragon-Sovereign flowers, scattering them again and again until they transformed into a floral palace, also sixty yojanas in size. Its pillars were made of the seven precious materials interwoven. He paved its floor with Sapphire-dark Mala-shi stone, which was soft to the touch and cool, delightful to behold, unlike anything in the ordinary world.

He then manifested ninety crores of jeweled garlands hanging down all around, as well as colorful robes of many kinds. He also displayed various skillfully made silken banners, incense garlands, jewel garlands, pearl garlands, and so on, adorning everything beautifully and purely. Again, countless treasure chests welled up, arranged in rows within the palace as offerings. Then, the most priceless, supreme Mani jewel mirrors appeared, clear both inside and out, reflecting everything without obstruction. Even the entire gathering in Kapilavastu, with all its magnificent offerings, was completely visible within these mirrors.

Again, ninety crores of dragon horses appeared, adorned with various precious ornaments as bridles and reins. Countless jewel bells chimed with each step. Having mounted these horses, all the Dragon Kings circled the Buddha three times in the sky. They played countless divine melodies from the Dragon Palace and rained down all kinds of exquisite treasures, scattering them upon the Tathagata and the community of Hearers. After making these offerings, they bowed their heads at the Buddha’s feet, gazed upon the World-Honored One without blinking, and, wishing to dedicate the merit and good roots they had accumulated, sought that all beings may equally attain Buddhahood. With palms pressed together facing the Buddha, they spoke a verse:

"Long cultivating kindness, patience, and great compassion, He perfected the marks of a hundred blessings, gracing his form.

Leaving his family behind, surpassing that city of Kapilavastu, His resolve firm, he sought the unsurpassed path.

For six years he demonstrated practicing asceticism, Subduing all heretics without fatigue.

He went straight to the site of the Vajra Seat, Freely giving the nectar of Dharma to all beings.

In days past, the Tathagata, the unexcelled guide, Renounced the royal palace's exquisite sensual pleasures.

Cutting off the topknot of his hair, he settled in mountains and forests, Caring naught for the fleeting glories of the world.

The sage once offered up his head and eyes, Accumulating merit to fulfill the causes of enlightenment.

Ordinary beings, upon hearing this, cannot even conceive of such a cause, Let alone emulate his arduous practices.

Just as the Buddha, as the patient immortal in the past, Was innocently harmed by King Kali.

His ears, nose, limbs, and body were cut and severed, Yet he felt no anger or resentment—only joy and serenity arose.

At that time, a foolish Brahmin, Came to weigh his own flesh on a scale and fainted.

When we hear of such difficult ascetic practices, We are filled with sorrow and distress.

How is it that the Tathagata does not give rise to anger, But loves and cherishes all beings as his own children?

Because one who harbors a wish to harm falls into the hells, Yet the compassionate master can save them from that.

The Tathagata is endowed with unsurpassed wisdom; He does not retaliate against those who have harmed him.

In the past, he cultivated the causes of great peace and joy, Hence his limbs were restored to their original state.

We all now give rise to pure faith, Praising the true conduct of the Tathagata.

Just as that sage benefitted sentient beings, May we all swiftly attain the supreme enlightenment."

At that time, the World-Honored One knew that the dragon kings had firm faith and understanding, and had made great vows. So from His face He emitted various rays of light, which shone everywhere, reaching up to the Brahma Heaven. Then the light re-entered through the crown of the Tathagata's head. At that moment, the venerable Asvajit pressed his palms together, knelt on one knee, and said to the Buddha: "It has always been the way of all Buddhas: when they emit such light, there is always a reason. May the Tathagata kindly explain this with His skillful means." Then that venerable one spoke this verse:

"Great fearless Lion of the Śākyas, What is the cause for emitting this light? Through the gate of compassion, you benefit gods and humans; I only wish the Thus-Come One would explain it to me.

All these Nāga kings with their retinues, And the assembly present, all in solemn awe, Only hope, Muni, that you sound your Brahma-voice And speak of this rare event: the radiance you emit.

Who, within the Dharma of the Buddha Śākyamuni, First awakened the great resolve (bodhicitta), inspiring this sign? Who is able to shatter all Māra’s armies And make them flee in terror, overcome?

Could it be this dragon host has long cultivated, Attaining inexhaustible virtues and merits? Let us hear the reason for this wondrous sign, So all our doubts are cleared, and our minds become pure."

At that time, the World-Honored One replied with a verse:
