The Recorded Sayings of Monk Rujing was compiled by the Song Dynasty Caodong school master Tiantong Rujing, with his disciple Wensu recording and editing the work. This book collects his teachings, Dharma talks, and poetic verses from his time as abbot of Tiantong Temple, focusing on the essentials of silent illumination Chan. It emphasizes the innate purity of mind and the practice of direct, sudden awakening. As a key figure in the revival of the Caodong school during the Southern Song Dynasty, Rujing's recorded sayings profoundly influenced the Japanese Zen master Dōgen and became one of the foundational texts of Japanese Sōtō Zen. This work is an important document for the study of Song Dynasty Chan thought and Sino-Japanese Buddhist exchange, holding a revered position both within and outside the Buddhist community.
