Pure Rules of the Illusory Abode Hermitage

First Month

On the fifteenth day, the Lantern Festival, offerings are arranged as appropriate. That morning, on the full moon, prayers are offered for the emperor. Throughout the year, on the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month—the new moon and full moon—the Great Compassion Mantra is recited before the morning meal, with prayers for the emperor. This cycle repeats each year. Additionally, there are six days considered auspicious according to one’s birth year; on these days, the same practice is followed: reciting the Great Compassion Mantra before the morning meal and offering prayers for the emperor.

Truly, the emperor’s grace is as vast as the sky’s canopy. Even humble monks in remote forests and springs rely on the emperor’s benevolence to live in peace and security. How could we limit our sincere gratitude and prayers to specific days? In truth, every moment, in every gesture and turn, is an opportunity to give thanks and offer prayers. Yet, we specially designate these auspicious days and the new and full moons to formally express this devotion. This is recorded here for clarity; other months are not listed separately.

On the second and sixteenth days of each month, when the assembly of sages convenes, the monastery prepares incense, flowers, lamps, candles, tea, fruits, and delicacies. These are offered in the Earth Deity Hall, and the community recites the Śūraṅgama Mantra. This practice is observed consistently each month.

Each month, five or six blank lines are left at the end for recording any annual events or customary observances that may need to be added later.
