### 進退

> Advance and Retreat

主伴交參合離有分。相逢狡路去住由緣。理不可專事無定論也。菴中執事之人。或一年或三五年心力疲倦。欲告假皈堂隨眾。主者當再三勸勉且令順緣。或必志不從。當隨其引退。菴主鳴眾會茶送皈或寮或堂。既送後須過一兩日備點心一筵待之。少見酬勞之禮也。或欲請人補前人之軄。須預前令相親之人密密和會。俟其允肯方鳴眾會茶。菴主白云。某軄某人既退。此務不可乏人。今請其人充之。仰望眾慈同垂勸請。菴主與大眾同對所請之人觸禮一拜。受請之人亦拜。就同大眾送皈軄所。眾人就賀畢。新軄之人當即懷香詣菴主處致謝。明日公界備點心一筵。請同執事光伴。以表管待之禮。或菴主入寂或疲倦或病緣欲引退時。於檀越處告說事因。請早求補處之人。既以得人補替。舊人當預於數日前告眾引退。或他之或就菴中閑房居處。其菴中執事之者。當備香燭齋饌等。或報隣封與檀越。懷香就新人處致禮。告請擇日入菴。宜種種嚴整。迎奉之禮不可苟簡。須具齋饌會隣封厚嚫於新住持表賀禮。并厚嚫舊人表謝禮。然後新住持躬詣隣封并檀越處人事以表參謁。其舊住持人亦次第往隣封檀家人事以表謝禮。庶見進退各不失其宜矣。

> The interplay of host and attendant, their merging and parting, all have their place. Meeting on divergent paths, coming and going depend on conditions. Principles cannot be held rigidly; matters have no fixed conclusions. For those serving in the hermitage, whether for one year or three to five years, when their mind and strength grow weary and they wish to request leave to return to the monastery community, the abbot should earnestly encourage them to continue, urging them to follow favorable conditions. If they are resolved and will not be swayed, then the abbot should honor their decision to withdraw. The abbot then calls the community together for tea and sees them off, whether to a dormitory or to the meditation hall. After seeing them off, one or two days later, a light meal should be prepared as a token of appreciation for their service. If someone is to be invited to fill the vacated position, a trusted person should first quietly sound out the candidate. Only after the candidate agrees should the community be called together for tea. The abbot then announces: "Such-and-such position has been vacated by so-and-so. This duty cannot go unfilled. I now invite this person to take on the role. I humbly ask the assembled community to join in urging them to accept." The abbot and the community then bow once to the newly invited person, who bows in return. Together, they escort the new appointee to their post. After congratulations are offered, the new appointee should immediately take incense and go to the abbot's quarters to express gratitude. The next day, the community officially prepares a light meal and invites the fellow officers to join, as a gesture of proper hospitality. Should the abbot pass away, or grow weary, or wish to retire due to illness, he should inform the benefactors of the situation and request that a successor be sought promptly. Once a successor has been found, the outgoing abbot should announce his retirement to the community several days in advance, then either depart or take up residence in a quiet room within the hermitage. The officers of the hermitage should prepare incense, candles, vegetarian offerings, and notify neighboring monasteries and benefactors. Bearing incense, they go to the new abbot to present their respects and formally request that he choose an auspicious day to enter the hermitage. The welcoming ceremony should be properly arranged—nothing casual or careless. A vegetarian feast should be prepared, neighboring monasteries invited, and generous gifts offered to the new abbot as a gesture of congratulations. Likewise, generous gifts should be given to the outgoing abbot as thanks. Afterward, the new abbot personally calls on neighboring monasteries and benefactors to pay his respects. The outgoing abbot also visits neighboring monasteries and benefactors in turn to express gratitude. Thus, both advancing and retiring are marked by proper decorum, each in their own fitting manner.
