### 副菴

> "Fuan"

一菴之務。為主者如身也。副其主者猶身之有臂也。謂副者輔也。迺輔佐其正不使偏邪之也。凡菴主失於思慮。罔於行持。當隨宜舉覺。密邇商量。使公道日開正因日著。物務以之而平。禮法以之而用矣。或菴主他出。事或臨己。凡假手以為之。須酌量主者之情。宛轉酬應。不可專於己見不順主情。甚非佐輔之良也。然久副不已主柄將歸。為副既不奪其主情。非但上和下睦。佗日必有忍俊不禁者繼踵而善輔之。是謂形直影端。由是觀之。非副其主乃所以副自己也。置身於名分之下者可不爾思。

> The duties of a monastery: The abbot is like the body, and his assistant is like the arms of that body. The word "assistant" means one who aids—one who supports the leader and keeps him from veering into partiality or error. If the abbot, through lapses in thought or negligence in practice, goes astray, the assistant should gently point this out at appropriate times and discuss it quietly and closely with him. In this way, the path of fairness grows clearer day by day, and the true cause of practice becomes ever more evident. Affairs are handled with balance, and rituals and regulations are properly observed. When the abbot is away, and matters arise that require attention, any action taken on his behalf must be weighed against his intentions. The assistant should respond with tact and flexibility, never stubbornly insisting on his own views or disregarding the abbot's wishes—such behavior would hardly befit a good helper. If one serves as assistant for a long time without end, authority may gradually shift into his hands. Yet, if the assistant never seizes the abbot's role but respects his position, then not only will those above and below remain in harmony, but in time others, unable to contain their admiration, will come forward to offer their own good assistance. This is what is meant by "when the form is straight, the shadow is upright." Seen in this light, assisting the abbot is truly assisting oneself. Those who stand within the bounds of their appointed role—should they not reflect deeply on this?
