> The Śramaṇa Śākyamitra from Siṃhala (known in Chinese as "Néng Yǒu," meaning "Able Friend") was a practitioner who had attained the third stage of sainthood. In the early years of the Mausoleum of Virtue era (664-665 CE), he traveled to the land of the Morning Sun (ancient China). With a desire to visit sacred sites, he journeyed to famous mountains and monasteries, eventually reaching the Western Daxing Monastery in the capital. There, he encouraged the monks to recite the \*Avataṃsaka Sūtra\* (Flower Garland Sūtra). Through an interpreter, he asked, "What scripture is this?" They replied, "This is the \*Avataṃsaka Sūtra\*." Śākyamitra’s expression turned solemn with respect, and he exclaimed, "I did not know that this scripture existed here as well." He joined his palms in reverence and joyfully praised it, saying: "If one merely hears the title of the \*Avataṃsaka Sūtra\*, they are certain not to fall into the four lower realms of existence. The meritorious virtues of this \*Great Expansive\* (Mahāvaipulya) scripture are inconceivable. In the Western lands, it is said that when someone washes their hands and prepares to recite this scripture, the water that drips from their hands—if it falls upon even an insect or an ant—causes that being, after death, to be reborn in heaven. How much more so for those who uphold, recite, and practice it; the blessings they gain are truly beyond imagination. It has also been heard that over two thousand \*li\* southeast of Yutian (Khotan), there is a kingdom called Zhejūpán (遮拘槃). West of the royal palace there is a hermitage, where a Mahāyāna \*śramaṇa\* recites the \*Avataṃsaka Sūtra\*. The king and his ministers offer him sustenance. One evening, during the night, a great light suddenly shone, filling the entire city. In the midst of this light, a hundred thousand heavenly beings appeared, offering robes, jewels, and garlands to both the king and the \*śramaṇa\*. The king asked, 'Who are you?' The \*devas\* replied, 'We were once insects living near the hermitage. When the \*śramaṇa\* washed his hands before reciting the \*Avataṃsaka Sūtra\*, the water droplets fell upon us. Through that blessing, we passed away and were reborn in the Trāyastriṃśa heaven. In heaven, it is natural to first remember the cause of one’s rebirth, so we have descended here to repay our gratitude.' Hearing these words from the \*devas\*, the king wept with both sorrow and joy and then established a law, saying: 'In my kingdom, I revere only the Mahāyāna teachings; the Lesser Vehicle (Hīnayāna) shall not be promoted.' From that time on, successive kings of that land have honored and supported Mahāyāna. When famous monks from other countries enter this kingdom, they are tested: those versed in Hīnayāna are sent away, while those of Mahāyāna are invited to stay and are supported. This custom continues unchanged to this day. Within the royal palace, there are twelve Mahāyāna scriptures in ten thousand verses each, including the \*Avataṃsaka\*, the \*Mahāprajñāpāramitā\*, the \*Mahāsamnipāta\*, and the \*Saddharmapuṇḍarīka\* (Lotus Sūtra). The king himself studies and upholds them, personally unlocking the door of their chamber, and when reciting them, he offers incense and floral decorations. Marvels such as these are indeed many."
