### 第二十三憍薩羅國造十一面觀音像免疾疫難感應出西國傳

> Chapter 23: Creating an Eleven-Faced Guanyin Image in Kosala to Avert Epidemics<note>Taken from the Western Lands Record</note>

佛滅度後八百年中。憍薩羅國中。疾疫流行。病死半分。經歷三年。不得免難。王臣共議。立誓祈請十方世界天上天下有大悲者。必來救護。爾時夢見。聖像具足十一面。身黃金色。光明照耀。舒手摩王頂言。我以十一面。守護王國。夢覺告臣。王臣人民。一日中造十一面觀音像。一時免難。以是已後一百年中。未遭此難矣。

> Eight hundred years after the Buddha entered Nirvana, a devastating plague swept through the kingdom of Kosala. Half the population died from the disease. For three years, the suffering continued with no relief. The king and his ministers gathered to discuss the crisis, and they made a solemn vow, praying earnestly to all the compassionate beings throughout the ten directions of the world, both in heaven and on earth, hoping that one would surely come to their rescue. That night, the king had a dream. In it, he saw a sacred image of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara with eleven faces, his body radiant with golden light, shining brilliantly. The Bodhisattva extended his hand, touched the king's head, and said, "With my eleven faces, I will protect your kingdom." When the king awoke, he told his ministers about the dream. Together, the king, his court, and all the people crafted an eleven-faced image of Avalokiteshvara in a single day. Immediately, the plague came to an end. For the next hundred years, the kingdom never again faced such a calamity.
