> Guard the Precepts

> After taking the precepts, one should always guard them carefully. It is better to die upholding the Dharma than to live without it. In the Small Vehicle's Four-Part Vinaya, there are the four fundamental transgressions (pārājika), thirteen saṅghāvaśeṣa offenses, two indeterminate cases, thirty naiḥsargika offenses, ninety pāyantika offenses, four pratideśaniya offenses, one hundred rules of training, and seven methods for settling disputes. In the Great Vehicle's Brahmā Net Sūtra, there are ten major precepts and forty-eight minor ones. All of these should be recited and mastered fluently. One must clearly understand what is permissible and what is forbidden, and what may be opened or closed. But above all, rely on the sacred words of the Buddha himself—do not casually follow ordinary, deluded people. For example, one should not eat<note>onions, garlic, leeks, shallots, asafoetida, meat, fish, rabbit, or dairy products such as milk, cakes, butter, or cheese, nor the larvae of beetles, nor pig and sheep fat. None of these should be eaten. If one encounters illness, it is better to give up one's life than to break the precepts by consuming alcohol, meat, or worldly delicacies</note>foods that are improper, nor eat at improper times<note>small meals, medicinal foods and fruits, rice drinks, bean soups, and similar items—anything outside the two regular meal times of the morning porridge and the midday meal is considered eating at an improper time</note>. These prohibitions should be upheld. The disasters brought by wealth and lust are more venomous than snakes—one must especially keep far away from them. Cherish all living beings as if they were your own infants. Let your words be true and your heart match your speech. Recite and study the Great Vehicle scriptures to nourish your vows and practice. When the precepts (śīla) are pure, the Buddha-Dharma will appear before you. Just as skin cannot exist without hair, so too without the precepts, nothing else can stand. Thus the sūtra says: "Cultivate vigor and uphold the pure precepts, guarding them as one would a precious jewel."
