The Continued Record of Pointing at the Moon, compiled by the lay Buddhist Nie Xian of the Qing dynasty, is an important Chan lineage history in the lamp-record style, succeeding the earlier Record of Pointing at the Moon. Continuing the work of its predecessor, this text primarily collects the recorded sayings, encounter dialogues, and transmission lineages of eminent Chan masters from the Southern Song to the early Qing dynasty, systematically outlining the developmental threads of schools such as Linji and Caodong. It vividly documents Chan gong'an and enlightenment journeys, serving as a crucial source for studying the history of Chan thought and its transmission. Not only does it extend the lamp-record tradition, but it also provides invaluable Chan materials for later generations, holding a pivotal scholarly position in Buddhist history by linking the past with the future.
