> Master Ketan, my late teacher, devoted himself from youth to the study of the Huayan teachings and commentaries, often forgetting to eat or sleep. Whenever he encountered unclear passages in the texts, he would tirelessly research them, refusing to rest until he had found the most accurate interpretation. Though his heart was weary and his body spent, he never paused for a moment. My teacher was especially proficient in the Kongmu Zhang. While staying at the Qinshi Room in Puti Temple, he opened a scroll one early morning and suddenly experienced a clear realization, as if gaining profound insight. Qin, seeing his extraordinary radiance, asked in surprise whether he had attained the highest Dharma. My teacher explained everything that had happened. Qin pressed his palms together in praise and encouraged my teacher to write down his insights as a commentary to illuminate the teachings of the Perfect and Sudden school. My teacher politely declined, saying he had no time for such a task, and also recognized the difficulty of being an author, so he dared not rush into it lightly. It was only at the age of sixty-five that he began composing this record, but he passed away before completing the section on "stages of cutting off afflictions." On his deathbed, he instructed me: "You must finish this work for me." I, Shanxi, felt deeply unworthy of following such a distinguished predecessor and dared not hastily continue his work. Now, as I approach the end of my own life—coincidentally at the same age as my teacher’s passing—I fear that, like a candle in the wind, my time may suddenly cease, and I would betray his final instruction. Therefore, setting aside my own lack of skill, I have drawn upon the teachings I received from my teacher to complete the remaining sections, producing a work of three fascicles. I know that, like an unskilled worker attempting a master carpenter’s craft, I invite the criticism of wasted effort and shame. But because my teacher relied exclusively on ancient interpretations, I have named this work \*Returning to the Ancient\*.
