Chapter 3: The Parable of the Rich Man
Then the Tathagata returned to the land of Magadha and arrived at the town of Uruvela. At dusk, he rested in the garden of the Brahmin Senā. The next morning, carrying his alms bowl, he approached Senā’s gate. The Buddha manifested a golden light that illuminated the hall within.
The Brahmin’s two daughters, the elder named Nandā and the younger named Nandabala, saw the light and were filled with joy. They quickly went to where the Buddha was, bowed in reverence, and invited him inside. The Tathagata ascended to the hall and taught the two women. They took refuge in the Three Jewels and received the Five Precepts.
The World-Honored One then said to them: “The body is not one’s own; all things return to emptiness.” The two understood this in their hearts, bowed their heads in acceptance, and vowed to practice accordingly. The World-Honored One reflected: “When I first set out on the path of learning, I wished to liberate all beings. Now, even the demon king of the desire realm has submitted to the power of the Dharma.”
Near the Nilan River, there was a Brahmin named Kasyapa, also called Utpala, who was one hundred and twenty years old. He was widely renowned and highly respected by the people. He diligently practiced fire worship day and night, never slacking off. He had five hundred devoted disciples. Kasyapa had two younger brothers who revered their elder brother as an enlightened master, and each of them also had their own disciples, all living downstream.
Kasyapa thought to himself, "My reputation grows day by day, and the whole country looks up to me. But my skills are limited and easily exhausted. Once they are exhausted, my fame will decline. I must devise a clever plan to maintain the people's great expectations of me."
So he went in search of a dragon and used his arts to summon one. He built a quiet chamber for it and instructed the dragon, saying, "If anyone dares to intrude into this chamber, spit fire and venom to destroy them." During festivals and gatherings, the dragon never failed to breathe fire. People far and wide all said, "The master's power is divine." And so, Kasyapa's fame and influence grew even greater.
The World-Honored One reflected, "Long ago, when I first left home, I met Ping Sha on the path. He vowed that if I attained the Way, I would liberate him first. For the sake of all beings, I agreed. Now I observe the hearts of the people—all are drawn to Kasyapa, and it is not yet time to turn them away. It is like a tree with beautiful fruit, tall and out of reach; one must cut the roots and trim the branches to reach the fruit. All obstacles lie with the dragon. I will subdue it first, and Kasyapa will follow! Only then will the great Way spread without limit."
The Tathagata said, "The sun shines upon the world with three virtues: first, its radiance dispels darkness, making all things clear; second, its light reveals the forms and colors of all beings; third, it nurtures growth, bringing vitality to all things. The Tathagata’s appearance in the world also has three purposes: first, the great wisdom that illuminates and dispels ignorance; second, the guidance through the five paths, showing the way of speech and action; third, the skillful means of salvation, bringing benefit and peace to all."
The World-Honored One, having resolved to go, rose from the Sītavana Grove and set out toward evening to visit Kāśyapa. Before he reached his destination, a golden light appeared, turning the trees, earth, and stones the color of gold. A disciple of Kāśyapa, carrying a water jar, saw the transformation and was stirred in heart. Astonished, he looked around and, from afar, beheld the World-Honored One, whose radiance illumined the world. Not knowing what wondrous being this was, he ran to tell his teacher. Teacher and disciples all came out. The majestic spiritual power of the World-Honored One shone with dazzling brilliance. Kāśyapa, his mind trembling and bewildered, thought to himself, "If this were the sun, my eyes could bear it! If it were a heavenly being, their eyes would also blink!" Later, pondering, he understood: "Could this be Prince Siddhartha of the Śākya clan? I have reckoned the signs: 'Prince Siddhartha, blessed to be a sage king, yet not delighting in royal glory, shall attain Buddhahood.' Long ago I heard he had left home—has he now accomplished the Way?" Suddenly, the Tathāgata arrived. Kāśyapa was overjoyed: "Welcome, Gautama! May you always be well and at peace." The Buddha then spoke a verse for Kāśyapa:
"Maintaining precepts brings peace in old age, Trusting in truth leads to wholesome rest; Wisdom is the safest refuge, Avoiding all evil brings peace."
Kasyapa addressed the Buddha, saying, "We humbly invite your virtuous presence to partake of our simple vegetarian meal." The Buddha replied to Kasyapa, "According to the ancient way of the Buddhas, we do not eat after midday. But let us speak plainly: I have a request to make, and I hope you will not refuse." Kasyapa answered, "I regret that we are not better prepared, but we receive you with sincere respect."
The Buddha said to Kasyapa, "May I stay here for one night? Will you allow it?" Kasyapa replied, "Our Brahmin custom is not to share sleeping quarters. I beg your forgiveness for this refusal. What else may I do for you?" The Buddha pointed to a quiet chamber and asked, "What is this room?" Kasyapa answered, "Inside dwells a divine dragon, fierce and jealous by nature. Anyone who enters is met with its fiery breath, which burns and harms them."
The Buddha said to Kasyapa, "Lend me this room." Kasyapa replied, "It is not that I am unwilling, but I fear the dragon will harm you." His five hundred disciples held their breath in alarm, afraid their teacher would consent. The Buddha asked three times. Kasyapa, though filled with doubt, felt he could not refuse—yet he feared disaster.
The Buddha told Kasyapa, "I have extinguished the fires of desire in all three realms. The dragon cannot harm me." Kasyapa answered, "O Gautama, your virtue is supreme. Stay as you wish." Then, displaying his majestic spiritual power, the Buddha entered the chamber.
The five hundred disciples, certain the dragon would bring harm, wept in distress, lamenting, "Alas, this noble one will be destroyed by the dragon!"
The Buddha sat for a short while. Then the dragon emerged from its cave, spewing venom that coiled around the Buddha. The Tathagata transformed all the poison into flowers. Seeing its venom turned into blossoms encircling the Buddha, the dragon grew furious and breathed fire, thinking it could harm him. But the scorching heat turned back upon the dragon, leaving it stifled and near death. Raising its head to look at the Buddha, the dragon beheld his majestic form and recognized his supreme dignity. A cool breeze then swept toward the dragon, and seeking relief, it approached the Buddha. The fire was extinguished, the poison dispelled, and the dragon surrendered itself, entering the Buddha's alms bowl. Thereupon, the Tathagata manifested a radiant light that blazed brilliantly, filling the sky.
Kashyapa's disciples, who had been keeping watch, saw the brilliant light and thought it was the dragon's fire. They cried out in sorrow, "Alas! The noble one has surely perished by the dragon's wrath!" Kashyapa and his followers, startled, rushed out together. His five hundred disciples reproached their teacher in unison, "Since the beginning of heaven and earth, we have never seen a human as wondrous as Gautama—so venerable, so precious. How we regret not observing him more closely! When shall we ever see his like again?" Wiping tears from their eyes, they chanted these verses:
His countenance shines with a golden-purple radiance, His face is full, his hair deep blue-black. The great one, blessed with a hundred virtues, Manifests a wondrous, fitting form.
His body stands square and tall, sixteen feet high, Adorned with eighty marks of excellence. The light from his crown illuminates the deepest darkness— How swiftly all this changes, how impermanent it is.
Later, his disciples, thinking the fire was harming the Buddha, cried out in sorrow and grief: "If Gautama is harmed, what purpose is there for me to live?" They leaped into the flames, yet found them cool and gentle. Looking back, they reported to their teacher: "Gautama is unharmed! What we thought was dragon fire must have been the Buddha's light!" The master and his followers were in turmoil, and they waited anxiously until dawn.
At dawn, the Tathagata took his alms bowl and left his dwelling. Kasyapa was overjoyed and said, "Is the Great Sage still alive? What is in your bowl?"
The Buddha told Kasyapa, "It is the so-called poisonous dragon, which has now been subdued and has accepted the Dharma."
His five hundred disciples all exclaimed, "The Buddha is divine!"
Kasyapa was inwardly humbled, yet he clung to his reputation and pridefully declared, "The Great Sage is indeed divine. Even so, he is not like me—I have already attained Arhatship!"
Kasyapa said to the Buddha, "Great Sage, please stay. I wish to make offerings to you." The next morning, he prepared a meal and went in person to invite the Buddha. The Buddha said, "Go ahead, I will follow shortly."
As soon as Kasyapa turned back, the Buddha, in the time it takes a person to bend and stretch an arm, traveled east to the continent of Videha, thousands of billions of miles away, and returned with a bowl full of a fruit called Jambu. Before Kasyapa could arrive, the Buddha was already seated on his mat.
Kasyapa asked the Buddha, "Great Sage, by which path did you come?" The Buddha replied, "After you left, I went east to Videha and brought back this fruit called Jambu. It is fragrant, delicious, and fit to eat."
After the Buddha had finished his meal and left, Kasyapa thought to himself, "Although the Great Sage is divine, he is still not as genuine in his path as I am."
The next day at mealtime, he went again to invite the Buddha. The Buddha said, “You may go ahead, I will follow shortly.” Kaśyapa turned back. The Buddha traveled south to the very edge of Jambudvīpa, gathered some myrobalan fruit, filled his bowl, and returned. Before Kaśyapa had even arrived, the Buddha was already seated on his mat. Kaśyapa asked the Buddha, “How did you get here first?” The Buddha replied, “I went south to fetch these fine fruits, which can be used to heal sickness.” After the Buddha had eaten and departed, Kaśyapa thought to himself, “This great ascetic truly possesses divine and wondrous power.”
The next day, Kasyapa again invited the Buddha. The Buddha said, "I will come later." The Buddha then went west to the continent of Godaniya, took some amala fruits, filled his bowl, and returned. Before Kasyapa arrived, the Buddha was already seated on his mat. Kasyapa asked the Buddha, "From which direction have you come again?" The Buddha replied, "I went west to Godaniya to fetch these amala fruits. You may eat them." After the Buddha had eaten and left, Kasyapa thought to himself, "This great ascetic truly possesses spiritual powers."
The next day, Kasyapa again went to invite the Buddha. The Buddha said, "I will follow shortly." Kasyapa turned back, and suddenly the Buddha was nowhere to be seen. The Buddha had already traveled to the northern continent of Uttarakuru and brought back naturally grown rice. Before Kasyapa could return, the Buddha was already seated on his mat. Kasyapa asked, "Where have you come from this time?" The Buddha replied, "I went north to Uttarakuru and brought this rice. You may eat it." After the Buddha finished his meal and left, Kasyapa thought to himself, "This great sage possesses such divine and wondrous power!"
The next day at mealtime, the Buddha took his bowl and went to their home himself, received the food, and returned. After eating, he wished to rinse his mouth, but there was no water. Then the god Śakra descended and pointed his finger at the ground, and a pond naturally formed. In the afternoon, Kāśyapa was strolling about when he saw the pond. Surprised, he asked the Buddha, "How did this come to be here?"
The Buddha told Kāśyapa, "This morning after receiving your food, I wished to rinse my mouth but had no water. Śakra pointed at the ground and created this pond for my use. This pond shall be called the Finger-Ground Pond."
Kāśyapa thought to himself, "This great ascetic possesses divine wonders and immeasurable merit!"
The next day, the World-Honored One moved closer to Kāśyapa and sat beneath a tree. During the first watch of the night, the Four Heavenly Kings descended together to listen to the Buddha’s teaching, their radiance shining as brightly as a great flame. Kāśyapa rose in the night and saw four fires before the Buddha. At dawn, he asked, "Great sage, do you also worship fire?" The Buddha replied, "No. Last night, the Four Heavenly Kings came to listen to the Dharma. That was their light." Kāśyapa thought again, "This great ascetic possesses extraordinary spiritual power, able to summon such heavenly beings. Yet even so, he is still not as true as my path."
The next day, the second night, the god Indra came to listen to the Dharma. His radiance outshone that of the four heavenly kings. Kāśyapa rose at night and saw the light before the Buddha. He thought to himself, “Could the Buddha still be tending the sacred fire?” At dawn, he asked the Buddha, “Are you not tending the sacred fire? The light last night was even brighter than before.” The Buddha replied, “Indra came down to listen to the Dharma. That was his radiance.”
Later that night, the Seventh Brahma Heaven descended again to hear the Dharma. Its radiance was twice as brilliant as that of Indra. When Kasyapa saw this light, he suspected the Buddha must be worshipping fire. The next morning, he asked the Buddha, "Great Master, You must certainly be a fire worshipper."
The Buddha told Kasyapa, "The Seventh Brahma Heaven came to listen to the Dharma last night. That was its light."
Kasyapa thought to himself: "This great ascetic possesses such awe-inspiring supernatural power that he can move the heavens and bring the Brahma beings down."
Kashyapa personally tended to three sacred fires. One morning he lit them, but found he could not extinguish them. Five hundred disciples and other attendants tried to help him put them out, but they could not be extinguished. Suspecting this was the Buddha's doing, Kashyapa went to inform him: "I tend to three sacred fires, but cannot put them out." The Buddha asked: "Do you want them extinguished?" Kashyapa replied: "I truly wish to extinguish them." The Buddha said: "Then the fires can be extinguished." As he spoke, they immediately went out. Kashyapa thought to himself: "This great practitioner is extremely spiritual and subtle; everything he does is in perfect harmony."
