### 法師身後緣記

無錫余　治

有乘戒法師者。居蘇州城外小普度。能講說佛法。一時興起者甚眾。若居士徐古璵。女士姚古明。皆其弟子也。淨業精勤。嘗著詩一卷。諷詠箴規。揚清激濁。今其詩。與尼量海居士彭際清善女人陶瓊樓所作。共成一編。名曰吳門四眾弟子淨土詩云。玉尺初作諸生時。赴浙闈還。路經其地。懷自所作淨土文字以求正。入門。則佛事匇匇。賓客濟濟。已圓寂第七日矣。悵然一拜。焚所作於靈案香爐而去。

> There was a Dharma Master named Cheng Jie, who lived at Little Pudu Temple outside the city of Suzhou. He was skilled in explaining the Buddhist teachings, and at one time, many people were inspired by him. Lay followers such as Xu Guyu and the lady Yao Guming were among his disciples. He practiced the Pure Land method with diligence and devotion, and once composed a volume of poems. These verses admonished and guided, praised the pure and discouraged the turbid. Now, his poems, together with those composed by the nun Lianghai, the layman Peng Jiqing, and the virtuous woman Tao Qionglou, have been compiled into one collection, titled \*Pure Land Poems by Four Disciples in the Wu Region\*. When Yuchi was still a young scholar, he was returning from the provincial examinations in Zhejiang and passed through that area. Carrying some of his own writings on the Pure Land, he hoped to seek correction from the master. Upon entering the temple, however, he found Buddhist ceremonies in full progress and many guests gathered—it was already the seventh day since the master had passed into Nirvana. With a sigh of regret, he paid his respects with a single bow, then burned his writings in the incense burner on the memorial altar and departed.
