Sutra on Steadfast Mind

Translation by An Shigao, Tripitaka Master from Parthia, Later Han Dynasty

Thus have I heard:

The Buddha said to Ananda, "Now I am in a state of meditative calm. I feel pity for people in the world who do not understand that the true Buddhist path is vast, profound, and right. Instead, they use shallow, false, and flippant words, driven by jealousy, to slander the root of the Way. They fabricate baseless difficulties and trouble my disciples. You should understand clearly that these guilty people are either evil teachers influenced by wicked forces, or simply foolish people ignorant of worldly truths.

Whether they are bodhisattvas, monks, nuns, laymen, or laywomen, those who clearly understand the scriptures and live with purity, who explain these truths to the ignorant and confused, teaching them about the causes of suffering and happiness in life and death—if such people accept this teaching and realize the truth of the Way, their sins are eradicated and blessings arise in them. However, if someone points the way clearly, like showing a bridge, but the other's heart is confused and unwilling to listen—even if they force themselves to hear, they are drowsy; if they slander the Dharma, insult monks or laypeople, speaking evil words falsely—know that such a person is being dragged along by their own sins.

Those who are wise monastics should put forbearance first. They should be like pure water, which cleanses everything unhindered—washing away dead people, dead dogs, dead snakes, feces, and urine, yet never losing its own purity. Likewise, you should maintain your mind like a broom that sweeps the ground, whether clean or dirty—sweeping away dead people, dead dogs, dead snakes, feces, and urine, yet never losing its own sweeping nature. You should also be like the power of wind and fire, which blow and burn dead people, dead dogs, dead snakes, feces, and urine, yet never lose their own nature.

If someone wants to kill you, do not get angry. If they want to slander you, do not get angry. If they want to speak falsely of you, do not get angry. If they mock you, do not get angry. If they try to ruin you so you cannot practice the Buddha's Dharma, do not get angry. Instead, only maintain a compassionate heart and a correct mind. Thus, sins vanish and blessings arise. Evil does not enter the good, and all wrongdoings melt away."
