Sutra on the Past Life Conditions of Śyāmāvadāna, Chapter 2
Thus have I heard:
Once, the Buddha was staying at Lake Anavatapta, together with a great assembly of five hundred monks. All of them had attained arhatship, possessing the Six Supernatural Powers and spiritual mastery, with the sole exception of one monk—Ananda.
At that time, the Buddha said to Shariputra: "In the far distant past, ninety-one eons ago, there was a king named Kind Speech, and his city was called Built by Kind Speech. There lived a Brahmin named Excellent Teacher, who was diligent in learning and widely knowledgeable in external studies, the Three Vedas, astronomy, prophecy, physiognomy, arts, the seven types of writing, and the teachings of other paths. He understood all methods, worldly texts, and possessed the thirty marks of a great being. He constantly taught five hundred sons of noble families. There was another Brahmin named Heavenly Brahmin, who was extremely wealthy, possessing elephants, horses, the seven treasures, attendants, and servants. His wife was named Pure Sound, who was exquisite in beauty, the foremost in appearance, with a gentle and harmonious nature and a mind free from jealousy. Excellent Teacher relied on Heavenly Brahmin as his patron. Pure Sound, the wife, provided Excellent Teacher with food, clothing, bedding, seats, and medicine when he was ill.
There was a Pratyeka Buddha named Love of Learning who once entered the city, carrying his robe and bowl to seek alms. By chance, he arrived at the Heavenly Gate. At that time, Pure Tone saw the Pratyeka Buddha—his robes were neat, his steps were measured and deliberate, and his six senses were completely serene. Overjoyed, she immediately offered him alms and said, "From now on, may your robes, food, bedding, and medicine always come from me. Please accept my offering for my sake." Pure Tone then filled his bowl with rich and delicious food. After receiving it, the Pratyeka Buddha lifted his bowl, soared into the air, circled seven times, and flew back to his dwelling place. When the people in the city saw this miraculous power, they said, "Our country has such a being—we are truly blessed." The whole nation rejoiced and offered him unending devotion.
Scripture says:
The pure-voiced one made an offering to the Solitary Buddha every day. The attendant Yandaruda took notice and gradually became thin.
Once Yandaruda became aware of his own thinness and the other's abundance, envy arose in him, and he spoke slanderous words: "This ascetic has no moral virtue. Why? Because he is committing impure acts with the pure-voiced one. That is why he receives lavish offerings."
Yandaruda then told his five hundred disciples: "This ascetic has broken his precepts and lacks diligent practice. Go, each of you, back to your homes and spread this message: 'This ascetic has no purity; he is intimate with the pure-voiced one.'"
The disciples said: "Yes, Master. As you say, this ascetic truly has lustful intentions."
The five hundred disciples, having received this instruction, entered the city and went through the streets proclaiming: "This ascetic has lustful intentions; he is intimate with the pure-voiced one."
The people of the kingdom became doubtful: "With such spiritual powers, can he really have such a scandalous reputation?"
This rumor persisted for seven years before it finally ceased.
Later, the Solitary Buddha manifested eighteen miraculous transformations and then entered final Nirvana. Only then did the people realize that Yandaruda had been lying and that the Solitary Buddha had been pure all along.
The Buddha said to Shariputra, "Do you know who Yana Ru Da was at that time? It was me. The Brahma Heaven king from that time was King Udayana. The pure voice from that time is now Shami Ba. And the five hundred young disciples from that time are now the five hundred Arhats."
The Buddha said to Shariputra, "At that time, because I lost my offerings, I became envious and joined with you in slandering the Pratyekabuddha. As a result of this, we all fell into hell together, where we were boiled in cauldrons for countless thousands of years. Because of the remaining consequences of this wrongdoing, even though I have now attained Buddhahood, I still face the slander known as the Shemiba incident along with you."
Thus, the World-Honored One spoke a verse on past-life causes and conditions:
"Long ago, as a Brahmin, I studied widely in the four branches of external knowledge. Settling in a grove of trees, I taught five hundred children.
There was a solitary Buddha, pure and possessing spiritual powers. Seeing this one receive offerings, I wrongly slandered him for no reason. I told the children, 'The ascetic has defiled conduct.'
The moment I said this, all the children were delighted. Hearing this, they went through every lane and alley, telling everyone: 'The ascetic has fallen into defiled conduct.'
Because of this cause, I spent a long time in hell. Both I and you all endured immeasurable suffering. Due to this remaining karmic cause, these five hundred people were slandered without reason—all because of this Shemipa.
Now, in this final age, I have attained the unsurpassed Way. Yet I am slandered without reason—because of this Shemipa.
Thus the Tathagata, having become a Buddha, the great general of the Three Realms, now speaks in the Anavatapta Lake of these past life conditions."
The Buddha said to Shariputra, "Look at the Tathāgata: all defilements are ended, all virtues are complete. With compassion for gods, humans, and even the tiniest creatures, I desire to rescue them all. Yet even with such merit, past conditions (karmic bonds) cannot be escaped. How much more so for those who are ignorant and have not yet recognized the path?"
The Buddha said to Shariputra, "You should study this, and all the Arhats and all beings should also study this."
The Buddha said to Shariputra, "You should guard your body against three wrongs, your speech against four wrongs, and your mind against three wrongs. Shariputra, you should practice in this way."
After the Buddha had spoken these words, Shariputra and the five hundred arhats, along with the dragon king Anavatapta, the gods, dragons, spirits, celestial musicians, demigods, garudas, centaurs, and mahoragas, all heard what the Buddha had said. They rejoiced and put his teachings into practice.
