> The Sutra of the Ritual for Mindful Recitation of the Eleven-Faced Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, Middle Scroll

> Translated by Śramaṇa Amoghavajra, Imperial Preceptor of the Great Guangzhi Temple at Daxingshan Monastery, with

> This ritual practice is applicable to all deities of the Lotus Family for recitation.

> I will now explain the practice ritual, which encompasses all methods related to Avalokiteshvara, including protection, invitation, offerings, and more. First, the practitioner should bathe, cleanse the body, and wear clean clothing. In a pure and quiet place, facing the sacred image, one should form the Samaya Mudra of this lineage: join both hands in the lotus gesture, with the remaining six fingers spread open like a blooming lotus. The secret mantra of Avalokiteshvara's lineage Samaya is:

> Om, homage to the noble one, svaha.

> Next, you should bless the water for bathing, whether in a river, pond, or bathhouse. The mantra for blessing the water is:

> Homage to the Three Jewels. Homage to the noble Avalokiteshvara, the great being. Om, may I be well-centered, may I be pure, May I be free from all obstacles, May I be liberated from all suffering, So be it.

> Then enter the pool and bathe with water. Form the Samaya Mudra of the Padma Family: cross your hands, right over left, with fingers interlocked to form a fist. Join the middle fingers together, slightly bending the first joints, and rest the two index fingers on the middle joints of the middle fingers without touching them, forming a shape like a vajra. The mantra is:

> Homage to the Great Auspicious One. Om. Shantayi, Samayi, Saumayi. Accomplishment, accomplishment, fulfillment. Shiveti, Shankari, Shvamayi. Avahaya, Sarvartha Sadhani, Svaha.

> With this seal, protect your body, ward off the Vināyaka spirits, and purify offerings such as incense, flowers, and food, making them radiant and pure. Next, form the Amṛta Kuṇḍalī Seal, which corresponds to the secret mantra. Apply this contemplation during bathing. Cross your two little fingers inward, bend both ring fingers to press between the crossed fingers, stand the middle fingers together, bend both index fingers to rest on the back of the middle knuckles of the middle fingers—not touching, like vajras—and extend both thumbs, pressing them against the sides of the middle fingers. The secret mantra is:

> I pay homage to the Three Jewels. I pay homage to the Vajra Wielder, the Great Yaksa General. I pay homage to the Vajra Protector. Om, Hulu Hulu, Tishta Tishta, Bandha Bandha, Hana Hana, Amrte Hum Phat.

> Next, form the mudra to consecrate the earth. Curl the four fingers of your right hand around the thumb to make a fist, then press this mudra onto the earth. Divide the earth into three portions for bathing, and consecrate it with this mantra. The mantra is:

> Om bu-ra hūṃ

> When entering any place of impurity or contact with defilement, protect yourself with the Touch-Body Wrathful Ucchuṣma Seal. With your right hand, form a fist and raise your thumb. Stamp it on five places: the forehead, the right shoulder, the left shoulder, the heart, and the throat. Recite once at each spot, then release the seal above the crown of your head. The mantra is:

> Om, Kṣitigarbha, Hūṃ, Jhaḥ.

> After washing your hands and rinsing your mouth, you should form the purification seal. Turn your right palm upward, bend the ring finger into the palm, and let the thumb and index finger touch at the base. With this seal, receive water and drink it three times, wipe your lips twice, then use the seal to touch both eyes, both nostrils, both ears, both shoulders, the heart, the navel, sprinkle both feet, and again take water to sprinkle over the body. The mantra is:

> Om, Kui Kui Li Ju Lu Suo Wa (two syllables combined) Ha (long vowel, same below).

> At the bathing place or by the riverbank, divide the earth into three piles. Use the first pile to wash from the feet to the waist, the second pile from the waist to the neck, and the third pile from the neck to the head. After bathing is completed.

> Then, with focused intention, contemplate the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, as well as the principal deity, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. With the mudra, scoop up water and, with concentrated mind, bathe the sacred assembly. Raise both palms, joining the backs of the six fingers from the middle finger downward, revealing the fingernails. The two index fingers are about to touch, with the two thumbs at the sides. This mudra is universal for all bathing rituals of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. The secret mantra is:

> Homage to the Three Jewels! Homage to the Noble Avalokiteśvara, the great being, the great being! Thus it is said: Jale, great Jale, Salvation, svāhā!

> Next, form the Argha Mudra. Turn both palms upward, with the thumbs gently touching the index fingers, and scoop water to offer as the Argha. The secret mantra is:

> Om, the Tathagata of the Vajra Realm, svaha.

> Then, with the mudra, scoop water and pour it over your own head. Visualize Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva holding a vase of sweet dew, his body radiating light, surrounded by a host of sages, with celestial beings playing exquisite music. Imagine Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva pouring the sweet dew over the practitioner’s body. Kundalī Mudra: Place the two index fingers each on the middle segment of the middle fingers, and press the two thumbs against the sides of the index fingers. The mantra is:

> Namo Maha Shriye! Om Hara Hara, Maha Viniye! Duna Duna, Pama Panaya, Tushtikritam Turu Turu, Vichivamsa Yala. Kshiminiviya Nividhe, Hana Hana, Viginavi Naya, Karma Tala, Guma Tala, Gu Sarva Karikaru, Shubhota Panna, Shriye Svaha! Vibhe Vibhe, Ming Ni Vibhe, Prajna Nani, Shri Mili Nili, Shokhye Jana Nani, Shuddhaya Svaha!

> After bathing and cleansing, take clean clothes and empower them with this Tathagata Robe Mantra. All garments thus adorned become Tathagata robes. The mantra is:

> Om, Rakṣa Rakṣa, all Buddhas, may you be firmly established, may you be well accomplished.

> Recite this seven times. After putting on your clothes and leaving the bathing place to go to the pure chamber, be free from greed, anger, and delusion. Do not look at filthy or mixed objects, nor at outcasts and other vile people. Visualize at the center of your own chest a full moon disc. This very moon disc is formed from the light of your own nature—a perfectly round, pure white bodhi mind, like a clean moon disc. Furthermore, upon the face of that moon disc, visualize the syllable HŪṂ. It is the color of red crystal and radiates light, illuminating the worlds in the ten directions. Within this light, your own body becomes Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, without any difference. The left hand forms a vajra fist, placed at the left hip, holding a lotus. The right hand is at your own heart, in the gesture of an opening lotus blossom. Contemplate that the nature of all phenomena is inherently pure, unstained by any defilements of afflictions, just like a lotus flower. The body has a circular halo of light. Upon the crown is Amitāyus Tathāgata. The body is adorned with various precious jewels and ornaments. The feet tread upon an eight-petaled lotus. Proceed to the outside of the pure chamber door and perform the sprinkling as before.

> Then, you should empower the crown of the head. With your right hand, form a fist, pressing the thumb and index finger together, and imprint it on the crown of the head. Recite the heart mantra of the Bodhisattva Tara:

> Oṃ, Kurukulle Svāhā.

> Then he enters the meditation hall, mindful of all the sages and worthies. With utmost reverence, he prostrates with his whole body touching the ground. Placing his right knee on the floor, he visualizes all the Buddhas of the ten directions, all the great bodhisattvas, and all the sages and worthies as if they were present before him. He then openly confesses his faults, rejoices in others' merits, requests the teachings, makes vows, and dedicates all merits toward supreme enlightenment. He then sits in the full lotus posture and forms the samaya mudra of his own practice<note>This is also applicable to the recitation practices of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva</note>. First, one should use Tārā Bodhisattva for protection. Bhṛkuṭī Bodhisattva is also highly effective, or one may recite the mantras of the other four great and wrathful vidyārājas, which is also permissible. The mudra of Holy Tārā Bodhisattva is as follows: Cross the hands inward, forming fists, and raise the index fingers together like an unopened blue lotus. The secret mantra is<note>The salutation is the same as the mantra for consecrating water above</note>:

> Om, Tare, Tuttare, Ture, Svaha.

> Next, the mudra of the Bodhisattva Vikūṭa is explained. It is similar to the Tārā mudra described above, but with the fingers slightly curved like a blue lotus. The mantra is as follows: <note>Homage as above</note>.

> Om, Sarasvati, Svaha.

> Next, the teaching on the Four Bright Kings Seal: Cross both hands inward and interlace the fingers, forming the seal at the crown of the head. The secret mantra says:

> Om, Vajra, Aksobhya.

> Then, with both palms pressed together, he covered his mouth.

> Evil

> Next, form the Lotus Seal. As with the previously described Blooming Lotus Seal, place it at the navel. The mantra for the Navel Seal is:

> Oṃ, homage to the Lotus, homage to the Great Lotus, homage to the One who holds the Lotus, Svāhā.

> Next, form the Horse-Headed Vajra King Seal. First, bring the palms together in the vajra gesture, with both middle fingers standing upright and joined. Use both index fingers to hook the tips of the ring fingers, pressing the index fingers onto the upper segment of the middle fingers. Tuck both little fingers into the palms, standing side by side. Bring both thumbs together and gather them close to the little fingers. The mantra is:

> Om Amrita Guna Vajra Vajra Vajra Hum Phat

> After sealing off the area with this mantra, next, establish the boundaries of the earth and the mandala. Interlock your two thumbs, spread and raise your remaining fingers, lifting your palms like the wings of an eagle. The mantra for setting the directional boundaries is:

> Homage to the Three Jewels. Homage to the Noble Avalokiteshvara, the Great Bodhisattva. Homage to the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One. Homage to all Tathagatas, Arhats, and Perfectly Enlightened Ones. Homage to the Noble Avalokiteshvara, the Great Bodhisattva, the Great Compassionate One. Thus it is: Ili, mili, kili, mili, vili, hili, svaha.

> With this mantra, bless the fragrant water. Recite it once to establish the boundaries of the space. Next, establish the mandala boundary. Cross your hands inward, palms open, then bring the tips of your index fingers together, and let both thumbs hang down fully, joining them together. The mantra is:

> The power of the guiding path.

> Use this seal and mantra to establish the mandala boundary. Then, for purification, use the mantra:

> Om, to the noble and venerable one, the great and powerful, I pay homage and offer praise.

> Next, the mantra for purifying the space is spoken:

> Om, Padma Devi, Mahāya Mahāya, Jñāna Mahāni Svāhā.

> Empower the incense burner with this mantra, rotating it upward while reciting seven times. First, prepare the water offering vessel. It may be made of conch shell, gold, silver, well-crafted copper, clean leaves, earthenware, or wood. Vessels of such kinds are praised. Fill the water offering vessel with fragrant water and flowers. For the four types of desired outcomes, also place flowers of four colors before the altar. Visualize the mandala as a vast ocean of milk and recite this mantra:

> Om Vimala Nadi Hum

> With both hands, cross your palms inward, turn them upward, and rotate them—this forms the vast ocean of nectar.

> Again, in the great ocean, he contemplated Mount Sumeru, a mountain formed of four precious substances, adorned with countless jewels interwoven in its splendor. With both hands, he formed a fist by crossing the fingers inward, and recited this secret mantra, saying:

> Om A Ja Ra Hum

> Form this mudra and recite the mantra. Visualize a jeweled mountain rising from the great ocean. Upon this mountain, envision a jeweled pavilion, its halls formed from countless treasures, everywhere adorned with hanging pearl garlands, jeweled necklaces, bells, silken banners, and streamers. A gentle breeze sways them, producing harmonious and elegant sounds. They are intricately decorated with various kinds of mani jewels, half-moons, full moons, and more. Furthermore, innumerable offerings fill the pavilion. Within its halls, behold the great mandala. While visualizing this, cross your ten fingers, right over left, at the first joints. Recite the following universal offering mantra, then send forth a carriage of the seven treasures to the place of the holy ones. The mudra: With both hands, interlace the fingers inwardly, palms facing upward. Erect the two index fingers, pressing their sides together. Place each thumb against the side of its respective index finger. The mantra is:

> Om, purify, purify, hūṃ.

> Next, form the Kundali Mudra. The hand gesture is as described earlier. The mantra is:

> Om Amrita Hum Phat

> The practitioner visualizes Vajra Kundali riding a jeweled chariot to the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. They envision Amitayus Tathagata ascending the jeweled chariot, with Amitayus seated in the center, Mahasthamaprapta on the left, and Avalokiteśvara on the right. Before Amitabha Buddha, the practitioner imagines their own principal deity seated. Then, they form the Invitation Mudra: interlocking both hands inward to form fists, with the left thumb tucked into the palm and the right thumb raised and bent, drawing inward toward the body to invite; to send off, push outward. Using the heart mantra of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva from the Lotus Family, recite:

> Tadyathā padma padma padma pāṇi sarasara ehehi hi bhagavān ārya avalokiteśvara eka nāśa mukha maṅgala vāhya aṅkuśa.

> Then recite the mantra of your own honored deity and offer the argha water. First, visualize a pure chamber as a jeweled pavilion, invite the sacred assembly to enter within, and then offer them seats. With the previous lotus mudra, bring the fingers slightly together. The mantra is:

> Om, Padma Viraja, Svaha.

> Then, recite this verse to respectfully thank the assembly of sages. The verse says:

> Sva-gataṃ bhagavan-nirhīna-praśānta-śānta-sita-mahā-kṛṣṇa-bhuja-mā-samanta-prasanna-jñeya-karuṇā.

> This verse, along with the mantra, should be recited three or seven times, and the seal of the deity should be formed to awaken it. By reciting the corresponding mantra three times, one becomes protected by the principal deity. The seal and mantra of the deity were first explained in the teachings on Hayagrīva Avalokiteśvara.

> Next, form the Seal of the White-Robed Avalokiteśvara, the Mother of the Division. The hand gesture is like that of the Tārā Bodhisattva, with the index finger gently curved. By forming this seal, you protect both the principal deity and yourself, and your recitation swiftly brings accomplishment. The mantra is:

> Oṃ Śveti Jñāni Paṇḍara Vāsini Jāṭa Makuṭa Dhāriṇi Svāhā

> Then form the Wall Boundary Seal. Interlace both hands inward, joining the two index fingers upright with a slight bend. The mantra says:

> Hrīḥ Dukku Dukku Prajñā Vajra Kūṭa Kūṭa Jvala Vajra Dhara Hūṃ Phat

> The lower realm has already been explained in terms of its application. Then, form the Great Realm Seal, performing the protection binding throughout. Next, one should offer incense and so forth. That seal binds the upper realm; this one binds the great protection. With both hands, interlace the fingers inwardly, and stand the middle fingers upright like needles. Place each index finger on the lower section of the middle finger's upper joint, without touching it. Each thumb rests against the side of the index finger. The secret mantra says:

> I take refuge in the Bhagavati, the Great Goddess of the Unfailing Vajra. Om, the great seal of the Dharma, the great samaya, svaha.

> Because of the protection of this great samaya, even the neighboring Wheel-Turning Kings cannot oppress you, let alone all the demons.

> Again, with both hands crossed inward, raise the two index fingers upright, and let the two thumbs hang down as low as possible, bringing them together. Form the upper boundary seal and recite the mantra:

> Om, you who are capable, you who are the lord of speech, to you I bow. Svaha.

> Next, the scented paste. Take two parts of sandalwood, an equal amount of tagara, four parts of priyangu, and eight parts of storax. Grind them finely, sift, then mix with water and grind again. This paste is used for all Lotus Family practices and applies to the four types of offerings. The distinctions for flowers, incense, food, and lamps should be understood according to their categories. When presenting them, each should be consecrated with its respective mantra, and the mind should make its request according to the purpose. For the five offerings mentioned above, hold them with both hands, place them at the forehead, and present them with the appropriate offering mudra.

> The Common Offering Mudra. Join both hands in prayer, interlace the first segments of all fingers, place each index finger on the middle segment of the middle finger, and recite the mantra five times. The secret words are:

> Homage to all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas! All Tathagatas, please protect me. Homage to the Gaganaganja, Svaha!

> Then, chant the Secret Praise King, singing praises to the principal deity. The praise says:

> Oṃ, Padma-rāga-nirmālaṅkāra-rāga-mudrā-lokanātha-mantraṃ svāhā.

> After reciting the praises, make expansive vows as you wish, confess your faults, and arouse the mind of enlightenment. First recite the mantra of the root mother, then recite the mantra of the root deity. Through the recitation of the root mother and the root deity, all karmic obstacles will be eliminated. The wise recite it seven times or twenty-one times. If you see an inauspicious or bad dream, recite it one hundred and eight times to dispel it. Empower the armlet and the grass ring using the secret mantra of the root mother, as described above. The secret mantra of the root deity is:

> Jirili Aḥrīḥ

> For the Lotus Family rosary, use lotus seeds or mani jewels. A young maiden should twist the thread, stringing them while reciting this mantra. The mantra is:

> Oṃ Amṛta Teja Śrīye Śrī Mahārṇi Svāhā

> Next, form the fundamental mudra of the Eleven-Faced Avalokiteshvara. With both hands, place the right over the left, interlocking the fingers on the outside, and bring the palms together. Raise this mudra above your head, thereby embodying the form of the principal deity. Recite the fundamental mantra seven times, then take up the prayer beads to begin the recitation. When you wish to recite, hold the coiled beads in your hand, then bring your lotus-like palms together at your heart. Recite the mantra for empowering the beads, and then raise them to your forehead. The mantra is:

> Oṃ Vajraśrīye Svāhā

> With both hands, gather the five fingers to hold the prayer beads; this is called the Prayer Beads Mudra. Using this mudra for recitation, maintain a pace that is neither too slow nor too fast, and continue without growing weary or lax. While reciting, do not let the mind wander to other things. Visualize the principal deity seated on a grass mat or a meditation cushion, aligning the mantra’s syllables with their true essence. Whether reciting a thousand or a hundred times, complete the set number. Then, with palms joined like a lotus, lift the prayer beads to your forehead, gaze respectfully at the principal deity, and bow with a sincere heart. Next, present offerings and praises as before, and offer the ceremonial water. Then form the Asamkhyeya-nidhāna Mudra: cross the hands inward, join and raise the middle and ring fingers together, and rest each index finger on the middle fingernail. The mantra is:

> Om Hrih Asamagni Hum

> Use this seal for personal protection. Then form the Samaya Seal of your own practice lineage, make offerings to the Buddha, dedicate the merit, and so forth, before leaving the ritual space. In a clean place, recite the Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra to accumulate a vast store of merit, dedicate it to unsurpassed enlightenment, and then walk mindfully as you wish. Next, form the Invincible Seal to receive protection in all times and places. Interlace the fingers of both hands inward to form fists, then stand the two middle fingers upright and join them together—this is the Invincible Seal. The mantra is:

> Namo to all Buddhas. Om, hulu hulu, zanali mangdengni, svaha.

> Every morning, after brushing your teeth and washing your face, the practitioner should purify and sprinkle water. Then, with the right hand, scoop up water, recite this mantra seven times, and drink it. Alternatively, if you first practice the accomplishment method for six months, all defilements, inauspiciousness, and karmic obstacles will be purified. The mantra is as follows:

> "Om, Shuddhe Nissuddhanaya Svaha."
