### 送僧之五臺

> To the Monk on His Way to Mount Wutai

五臺山上清凉國。山中盡是黃金色。重疊煙霞不見人。聞道文殊半天出。當年無著曾未知。南方佛法成澆漓。三百五百何太少。前三後三多更奇。至今眼底數不足。但見青山與幽谷。金鸎啼處白雲飛。師子吼時芳草綠。上人自是寒拾流。翩然忽作臺山遊。神光萬里露片額。布褐一領青雙眸。眾生熱惱思甘露。大施門開為流布。佗日懸崖撒手歸。莫道東西沒分付。

> On the cool land of Mount Wutai, the mountains are filled with golden splendor. Layer upon layer of mist and clouds obscure all human traces; it’s said Manjushri appears high up, only half-revealed. Long ago, the monk Wuzhuo had not yet realized this; the Dharma in the south was growing shallow and diluted. Three hundred and five hundred disciples—how could that be too few? The deeper meanings of the “three before and three after” are even more wondrous. Even now, we still cannot fully grasp it all; we see only green mountains and deep valleys. Where golden orioles sing, white clouds drift freely; where the lion’s roar resounds, fragrant grass turns green. You, honored practitioner, are oneself a disciple of Han Shan and Shide, calmly yet suddenly journeying to Mount Wutai. Radiant spiritual light reveals a glimpse across ten thousand miles; a simple robe covers you, and your eyes shine bright. Sentient beings, afflicted by heat and confusion, long for sweet rain of Dharma. You open wide the gate of great generosity to let it flow everywhere. One day, when you let go from the precipice and return, do not say that nothing was entrusted east or west.

金鸎啼處白雲飛。師子吼時芳草綠。若以詩人取之。亦可謂奇句耶。然此非詩也。又此二句。每上四字。人能道之。而每下三字。曰白雲飛芳草綠。以接其上。孰能擬乎。

> Where the golden oriole sings, white clouds drift. When the lion roars, the green grass flourishes. If a poet were to take these lines, they might indeed be called remarkable verses. Yet these are not poetry. Furthermore, each of these two lines contains four characters that anyone can speak: "Where the golden oriole sings" and "When the lion roars." But the following three characters—"white clouds drift" and "green grass flourishes"—connecting to what precedes them—who can match that?
