Instructions for Attendant Guo
A flower is raised, and a smile is shared. An arm is cut off to find peace of mind. But when we do not truly listen, we call a bell a jar. When circumstances force our hand, we mistake mistake for right. We speak of Buddhas, Patriarchs, Mind, and Buddha-nature—but isn't this just like cutting healthy flesh to create a wound on perfectly good skin?
A true practitioner sees clearly before the embryo forms and before any sign appears. The mind opens wide, vast and unobstructed, penetrating the ten directions of emptiness. This very person becomes no different from Shakyamuni Buddha or Bodhidharma. This is called the King of Samadhis, the Wish-Fulfilling Gem, the Inexhaustible Treasury of Spiritual Powers, the Vajra Sword. It is the crouching lion, the blazing fire—countless names filling the three realms and the ten directions. In this world and beyond, not a single speck of dust or phenomenon exists to be your partner, opponent, obstacle, or hindrance.
When Waterweed was stepped on by Mazu, he burst out laughing and said: "Hundreds of teachings, countless subtle meanings—recognize their root on the tip of a single hair!" Once the root is clear and the source is corrected, you turn the great Dharma wheel and shine the great Dharma eye. You wield the sword that takes life and the sword that gives life. You pull out nails, remove wedges, untie tangles, and cut away bonds, ensuring the seed of Buddhahood never ends in the realm of sentient beings. Isn't this truly a great person accomplishing the work of a great person?
