### （二九）作樂供養成辟支佛緣

> The Story of Becoming a Pratyekabuddha Through Making Music as an Offering

佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。時彼國中豪貴長者，各自莊嚴，著好服飾瓔珞環釧，齎持香花，作倡伎樂，皆共相將，欲出城外遊戲自樂。到城門中，值佛世尊將諸比丘，著衣持鉢入城乞食。時彼諸人，見佛如來，圓光晃昱，三十二相、八十種好，光明暉曜，如百千日，各懷歡喜，前禮佛足，作倡伎樂，供養佛僧，各以所捉種種雜花，而散佛上，於虛空中，變成花蓋。佛以神力，遍覆舍衛。時諸人等，見是變已，歎未曾有，即便以身各各五體投地，因發誓願：「以此作倡伎樂善根功德，使我來世得成正覺，廣度眾生，如佛無異。」發是願已，佛即微笑，從其面門，出五色光，遶佛三匝，還從頂入。

> The Buddha was in the kingdom of Shravasti, at Jetavana, the garden of Anathapindika. At that time, the wealthy and noble elders of that kingdom each adorned themselves, wearing fine clothing, necklaces, bracelets, and armlets. Carrying incense and flowers, and performing music and entertainment, they all came together, intending to leave the city to play and enjoy themselves. When they reached the city gate, they encountered the World-Honored Buddha, who was leading the monks, wearing his robes and carrying his alms bowl, entering the city to seek alms. When those people saw the Tathagata, with his perfect halo shining brightly, his thirty-two marks and eighty excellent characteristics, his radiance blazing like a hundred thousand suns, each of them felt joy in their hearts. They approached and bowed at the Buddha's feet, performed music and entertainment as offerings to the Buddha and the Sangha, and each scattered the various flowers they held upon the Buddha. In the open sky, these flowers transformed into a flower canopy. Through the Buddha's spiritual power, it covered all of Shravasti. When those people saw this transformation, they marveled at what had never been before, and immediately threw themselves to the ground, touching it with all five limbs. Then they made vows: "By the roots of merit and virtue from this music and entertainment, may we in future lives attain perfect enlightenment and liberate countless beings, just like the Buddha." Having made these vows, the Buddha smiled, and from his face came five-colored light, which circled the Buddha three times and then re-entered through the crown of his head.

爾時阿難，而白佛言：「如來尊重，不妄有笑。以何因緣，今者微笑？唯願世尊！敷演解說。」佛告阿難：「汝今見此諸人等不？」阿難白言：「唯然已見。」「此諸人等，以其作樂散花供養善根功德，於未來世，一百劫中，不墮地獄、畜生、餓鬼，天上人中常受快樂，最後身得成辟支佛，皆同一號，名曰妙聲，廣度眾生，不可限量，是故笑耳。」

> At that time, Ananda said to the Buddha, "The Tathagata is dignified and does not smile without reason. What cause and condition made you smile today? We only pray that the World-Honored One will explain it to us." The Buddha told Ananda, "Do you see all these people now?" Ananda replied, "Yes, I have seen them." "All these people, by the merit of their good roots in making music and scattering flowers as offerings, will not fall into the hells, the animal realm, or the realm of hungry ghosts for one hundred kalpas in future lives. They will always enjoy happiness among humans and gods, and in their final body they will become Pratyekabuddhas, all with the same name, Wonderful Sound. They will save countless beings far and wide. That is why I smiled."

爾時諸比丘聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。

> At that time, all the monks heard what the Buddha had said, rejoiced and faithfully put it into practice.
