> Hungry Ghost with the Foul-Smelling Body

> The Buddha was staying at the Bamboo Grove Monastery in Rajagriha. One day, when mealtime approached, the Venerable Mahamaudgalyayana put on his robes, took his alms bowl, and entered the city to beg for food. After finishing his meal and putting away his robes and bowl, he sat cross-legged under a tree and entered deep meditation. In his meditation, he saw a hungry ghost whose body was extremely foul-smelling, so repulsive that no one could bear to be near it. Mahamaudgalyayana asked it, "What deed did you commit to receive this form, so foul that none can approach?" The hungry ghost replied, "Go ask the Buddha yourself—he will explain it to you." Thereupon, Mahamaudgalyayana went to the Buddha and paid his respects. Following the Buddhas' customary practice, the Buddha first greeted him, saying, "What unusual thing have you seen today?" Mahamaudgalyayana said to the Buddha, "Just now, while sitting under a tree in meditation, I saw a hungry ghost whose body was so foul it was worse than human excrement. It ran frantically in all directions, seeking excrement and urine to eat as if they were delicacies. World-Honored One, what deed led to such a retribution?" The Buddha said to Mahamaudgalyayana, "Do you wish to know the causes and conditions behind this?" Mahamaudgalyayana replied, "Yes, World-Honored One, I would love to hear it."

> At that time, the World-Honored One said to Maudgalyayana, "Listen carefully now, and I will explain this to you in detail. In the distant past, countless eons ago, in the kingdom of Varanasi, there appeared in the world a Pratyekabuddha, who dwelt in a secluded place, using grass as a mat, sitting in meditation with focused mind. But he fell ill, and a skilled physician prescribed medicine, saying that he needed meat to recover. When the Pratyekabuddha heard this, he entered the city and saw a elder named Jishan, from whom he begged for meat. At that time, the elder instructed his wife, Pandora, 'I have an urgent matter and must go out now. Please prepare the appropriate medicinal food for the Pratyekabuddha.' His wife replied, 'You just go ahead without worry about what's behind. I will provide the Pratyekabuddha's meal myself.' The elder then left. But Pandora, overcome by greed and stinginess, thought to herself, 'If I give him food today, he will come again tomorrow—that would be loathsome to see.' With this thought, she asked for his alms bowl, went to a hidden place, filled the bowl with excrement, covered it with rice, and gave it to the Pratyekabuddha. He immediately detected the foul smell, threw it to the ground, and left without it. Because of this karmic deed, in countless lifetimes she fell into the realm of hungry ghosts, her body foul and stinking, so that no one could approach her, and she always regarded human waste as delicious food." The Buddha said to Maudgalyayana, "Know that the elder's wife who gave the Pratyekabuddha a bowl filled with excrement is now this hungry ghost."

> When the Buddha spoke of the causes of hungry ghosts, the monks gave up greed and aversion, weary of birth and death. Some attained the first stage of awakening, some the second, some the third, and some full awakening. Some set their minds on the way of the solitary enlightened, and some on the supreme path of enlightenment.

> At that time, the monks, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and carried them out with devotion.
