### （六四）有大力緣

> Chapter 64: The Power of Great Strength

佛在迦毘羅衛國尼拘陀樹下。時彼國中，有一長者，財寶無量，不可稱計，選擇族望，娉以為婦，作倡伎樂，而娛樂之。其婦懷妊足滿十月，生一男兒，骨節麤大，肥壯大力，父母見之，因為立字，名曰大力。年漸長大，勇健多力，無有及者。將諸親友遊行觀看，到尼拘陀樹下，見佛世尊，三十二相、八十種好，光明普曜，如百千日，心懷歡喜，前禮佛足，却坐一面，佛即為其說四諦法，心開意解，得須陀洹果。歸白父母，求索入道。父母愛念，不能違逆，將詣佛所，求索出家。佛即告言：「善來比丘！」鬚髮自落，法服著身，便成沙門。精懃修習，得阿羅漢果，三明六通，具八解脫，諸天世人，所見敬仰。

> The Buddha was staying beneath the Nyagrodha tree in the country of Kapilavastu. In that land, there lived a wealthy elder whose treasures were so abundant they could not be measured. He chose a wife from a distinguished family and married her with music and celebration. Before long, she became pregnant, and after ten full months, she gave birth to a son. The child had large, sturdy bones and a strong, powerful build. When his parents saw him, they named him "Great Strength." As he grew older, he became so brave and mighty that no one could match his power. One day, he went out with his relatives and friends to enjoy the sights, and they came to the Nyagrodha tree, where they saw the World-Honored One. The Buddha radiated the thirty-two marks of a great being and the eighty fine attributes, his light shining brilliantly like a hundred thousand suns. Filled with joy, the young man stepped forward, bowed at the Buddha's feet, and sat to one side. The Buddha then taught him the Four Noble Truths, and his mind opened to understanding, awakening to the fruit of Stream-Entry. He returned home and asked his parents for permission to enter the monastic life. His parents, loving him deeply, could not refuse. They brought him to the Buddha, where he requested ordination. The Buddha said, "Welcome, monk!" At once, his hair and beard fell away, and monastic robes appeared on his body, and he became a renunciant. He practiced diligently and attained the fruit of Arhatship, possessing the threefold knowledge and six supernormal powers, and fully realizing the eight liberations. Gods and humans alike looked upon him with reverence and admiration.

時諸比丘，見是事已，白佛言：「世尊！此大力比丘，宿殖何福，生則大力，勇健無敵，又值世尊，出家得道？」爾時世尊告諸比丘：「汝等諦聽！吾當為汝分別解說。乃往過去九十一劫，波羅㮈國，有佛出世，號毘婆尸，教化周訖，遷神涅槃。時彼國王，名槃頭末帝，收取舍利，造四寶塔。時有一人，在此塔邊，高聲唱言，集喚眾人，建立塔棖。發願而去。緣是功德，九十一劫，不墮地獄、畜生、餓鬼，天上人中，常有大力，受天快樂，乃至今者，遭值於我，故有大力，出家得道。」佛告諸比丘：「欲知彼時唱喚眾人竪立棖者，今此大力比丘是。」

> Then the monks, seeing this, said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! This mighty monk—what merit did he cultivate in past lives that he was born with great strength, brave and invincible, and also encountered the World-Honored One, left home, and attained the Way?" At that time, the Buddha told the monks: "Listen carefully! I will explain this for you in detail. In the distant past, ninety-one eons ago, in the country of Varanasi, a Buddha appeared in the world named Vipashyin. After completing his teachings, he entered Parinirvana. At that time, the king of that country, named Panthumati, collected the relics and built a four-treasure stupa. There was a man who, near this stupa, called out loudly, gathering people to set up the stupa's pillar. He made a vow and left. Because of this merit, for ninety-one eons, he never fell into hell, the animal realm, or the realm of hungry ghosts. In heavenly realms and among humans, he always had great strength and enjoyed heavenly bliss. Now, finally, he has encountered me, and thus he has great strength, left home, and attained the Way." The Buddha told the monks: "Know that the one who called out to gather people to erect the pillar back then—this mighty monk is that very person."

爾時諸比丘，聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。

> At that time, the monks, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and carried them out with devotion.
