### （八四）三藏比丘緣

> Bhikkhu of the Three Baskets

佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。時波斯匿王夫人懷妊，足滿十月，生一男兒，端政殊妙，世所希有，身被袈裟，生已能語，問父王言：「如來世尊，今者在不？大德迦葉、舍利弗、大目揵連，如是遍問諸大弟子，悉為在不」父王答曰：「今悉都在。」「唯願大王！為我設供，請佛及僧。」尋勅為設，請佛入宮，見其太子，而問之曰：「汝自憶念迦葉佛時，是三藏比丘不？」答言：「實是。」「處此胞胎，為安隱不？」「蒙佛遺恩，得存性命，得過日夕。」時王夫人，見此太子與佛世尊共相答問，喜不自勝，而白佛言：「今此太子，宿殖何福，生便能語，乃能與佛感有答問？唯願世尊！敷演解說。」爾時世尊，即便為王，而說偈言：

> The Buddha was staying at the Jeta Grove in the kingdom of Shravasti. At that time, Queen Mallika of King Prasenajit conceived and, after a full ten months, gave birth to a son. The child was exceptionally handsome and extraordinary, rare in all the world, and he was born already robed in a monk's kasaya. From the moment of birth he could speak, and he asked his father the king, "Is the Thus Come One, the World-Honored One, here at present? Are the Great Kashyapa, Shariputra, and Maudgalyayana—truly, are all the great disciples present?" The king answered, "They are all here now." The prince said, "I beg you, Great King, to prepare an offering and invite the Buddha and the monks." The king immediately ordered the arrangements and invited the Buddha to the palace. Seeing the crown prince, the Buddha asked him, "Do you remember that you were a monk versed in the three collections of scriptures in the time of Kashyapa Buddha?" The prince replied, "Indeed, I was." "And are you comfortable in this womb?" "Thanks to the Buddha's grace, I have been kept alive and have managed to pass my days." When the queen saw the crown prince exchanging these words with the World-Honored One, she was beside herself with joy and said to the Buddha, "What merit has this prince planted in past lives that he could speak at birth and even converse with the Buddha? I beg you, World-Honored One, to explain this for us." At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses for the king:

「宿造諸善業， 百劫而不朽，善業因緣故， 今獲如是報。」

> Good deeds performed in past lives endure for a hundred kalpas, never fading. Because of these karmic causes and conditions, one now receives such rewards.

是時波斯匿王及其夫人，聞佛世尊說此偈已，前白佛言：「不審，世尊！過去世時其事云何？唯願世尊！敷演解說。」爾時世尊，告大王曰：「汝今諦聽！吾當為汝分別解說。此賢劫中，波羅㮈國有佛出世，號曰迦葉，將諸比丘，遊行教化，到迦翅王國。時王太子，名曰善生，見佛世尊，深生信敬，歸白大王，求索入道。王不聽許：『我唯一子，當繼王位，養育民眾，終不聽汝出家入道。』時王太子，聞是語已，愁悴躃地，斷穀不食，一日二日乃至六日，絕不飲食。時諸群臣，啟白王言：『太子不食，已經六日，恐命不全。願王今者，聽使出家，故得相見。』時彼大王聞臣語已，不能違逆，勅彼太子：『共作要誓，汝今若能讀誦三藏經書通利，聽汝出家，然後見我。』時彼太子聞王勅已，心懷喜悅，尋即出家，懃加誦習三藏經書，盡令通利，還來見王。王問比丘：『我先勅汝，要誦三藏經書通利，然後見我。今為利不？』比丘答曰：『今悉通利。』王大歡喜，即語比丘：『我今庫藏，所有財物，隨汝取用，終不悋惜。』於時王子比丘聞王教已，大取財物，施設種種百味餚饍，請迦葉佛及二萬比丘，供養訖已，一一比丘各施三衣六物。緣是功德，不墮惡趣，天上人中，常有袈裟裹身而生，乃至今者，遭值於我，故有袈裟，出家得道。」

> At that time, King Prasenajit and his consort, having heard the World-Honored One speak these verses, stepped forward and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, we are uncertain—what happened in the past? Please, World-Honored One, explain this for us." Then the World-Honored One said to the great king: "Listen carefully now, and I will explain it for you. In this Fortunate Eon, in the city of Varanasi, a Buddha appeared in the world, known as Kāśyapa. He led a community of monks, traveling and teaching, and arrived at the kingdom of Kāśyapa. At that time, the crown prince, named Shan Sheng (Good Birth), saw the World-Honored One and felt deep faith and reverence. He returned and told the king, asking permission to enter the monastic path. But the king refused, saying, 'You are my only son. You must inherit the throne and care for the people. I will never allow you to renounce the world and become a monk.' Hearing this, the prince grew despondent, collapsed to the ground, and stopped eating—neither food nor water—for one day, two days, up to six days. The ministers then said to the king, 'The prince has not eaten for six days. His life may be in danger. We ask that you allow him to become a monk, so that he may still survive and you may see him again.' Hearing this, the king could not refuse. He commanded the prince, 'Let us make a pact. If you can fluently recite the scriptures of the Three Baskets, I will allow you to become a monk, and only then may you come to see me.' When the prince heard the king's command, he was overjoyed. He immediately entered the monastic life, diligently studied the Three Baskets, and mastered them all. He then returned to see the king. The king asked the monk, 'I previously commanded you to recite the Three Baskets fluently before seeing me. Have you done so?' The monk replied, 'I have now mastered them all.' The king was greatly pleased and said to the monk, 'All the treasures in my storehouse—take whatever you need, without hesitation.' Hearing this, the prince-monk took great wealth and arranged a grand feast with a hundred flavors, inviting Buddha Kāśyapa and twenty thousand monks. After the offerings were complete, he gave each monk a complete set of three robes and six requisites. Because of this merit, he never fell into the lower realms. In heaven or among humans, he was always born with a monastic robe wrapped around him. Even to this day, he has encountered me, and thus possesses a robe, having renounced the world to attain the Way."

爾時諸比丘，聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。

> At that time, the monks, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and carried them out with devotion.
