> The Story of the Monk with a Deformed Hand

> Thus I have heard: At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Jetavana Grove at Anathapindika's Park in the kingdom of Shravasti. In that city there was a wealthy elder of boundless and immeasurable wealth. He chose a bride from a prestigious family, and arranged for her various kinds of music and entertainment to delight her. His wife became pregnant, and when her pregnancy reached full term of ten months, she gave birth to a baby boy who was born without hands. Yet the moment he was born, he was able to speak, and he proclaimed: "Hands like these are truly hard to come by—I cherish and treasure them deeply." His parents were astonished and summoned fortune-tellers to divine the child's fate. When the fortune-tellers looked at him, they asked the parents: "At the time this child was born, what auspicious signs appeared?" The parents replied: "After this child was born, he proclaimed: 'Hands like these are truly hard to come by.'" So they gave him the name "Handless." As he grew older, he was naturally gentle and obedient, intelligent and clever. He led his relatives and friends on a gradual tour, and when they arrived at the Jetavana Grove, he saw the Buddha, the World-Honored One, graced with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor characteristics, radiant with splendor like a hundred thousand suns. His heart filled with joy, he approached and bowed at the Buddha's feet, then stood to one side. The Buddha then expounded the Dharma for him in various ways, and his mind opened, his understanding was freed, and he attained the fruit of stream-entry. He returned and took leave of his parents, seeking to enter the monastic path. His parents, loving him dearly, could not deny his wish, and brought him to the Buddha, seeking ordination. The Buddha then said to him: "Welcome, monk!" His hair and beard fell away of themselves, the Dharma robes appeared on his body, and he became a renunciant. He practiced diligently and energetically, and attained the fruit of arhatship, possessing the three knowledges, the six supernormal powers, and the eight liberations. He was revered and looked up to by gods and humans alike.

> At that time, the monks saw what had happened and said to the Buddha, "What merit did this Handless Monk cultivate in a past life that he could speak at birth, yet has no hands, and also met the World-Honored One and attained the path?" The Buddha told the monks, "Listen carefully! I will explain this to you. In this auspicious eon, a Buddha named Kashyapa appeared in the kingdom of Varanasi. There were two monks—one was an Arhat, the other an ordinary person who served as a Dharma teacher. People constantly competed to invite them, always taking the Dharma teacher along to receive offerings from donors. One day, when the Dharma teacher was absent, they took the other monk instead. The Dharma teacher, angry and resentful, scolded, 'I always washed your bowls and gave you water, and now you take someone else instead. From now on, may you serve me no more—may I have no hands.' After saying this, they each parted ways and stopped traveling together. Because of this karmic connection, he suffered this consequence for five hundred lifetimes. That is why it is said, 'Hands are truly hard to come by.'" The Buddha told the monks, "Know that the Dharma teacher monk who made that curse at that time is now the Handless Monk. Because he served a holy being back then, he now meets me, leaves home, and attains the path."

> When the Buddha finished teaching the causes and conditions of the wheel of hands, all the monks guarded their own karma of body, speech, and mind, and grew weary of birth and death. Some attained the stage of stream-entry, some the stage of once-returning, some the stage of non-returning, and some the stage of arhatship. Some gave rise to the aspiration for pratyekabuddhahood, and some gave rise to the aspiration for supreme enlightenment.

> At that time, the monks, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and carried them out with devotion.
