> Chanting That Life and Death Are Utmost Suffering

> At that time, the monks, seeing this, said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! This monk who spoke of birth and death—what merits did he accumulate in past lives that he could speak at birth, remember his past lives, and also encounter the Thus-Come One, leave home, and attain the Way?" The World-Honored One then told the monks: "Listen well! I will explain this for you in detail. In this Fortunate Eon, when human lifespan was twenty thousand years, a Buddha named Kāśyapa appeared in the world in the city of Vārāṇasī. In his teachings, there was a novice monk who served his teacher. At that time, a great festival was being held in the city, and the novice said to his teacher: 'Today is the festival—we should go for alms early and will surely receive much.' The teacher replied: 'It's still early; we can sit in meditation first.' A second and third time, the novice made the same request, but the teacher still did not consent. The novice, angered, cursed harshly: 'Why don't you just die here right now?' Having said this, he left immediately, went into the city for alms, and upon returning to his dwelling, he repented to his teacher. Because of this karmic deed, for five hundred lifetimes he fell into the hells and suffered great pain. Only now has he been released. That is why he cries out that birth and death are extreme suffering." The Buddha told the monks: "Know that the novice who cursed his teacher at that time is this monk who speaks of birth and death now."

> At that time, the monks, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and carried them out with devotion.
