> Western Regions Master Vimalamitra's Slander of Mahayana and Its Five-Tongued Recurrence<note>Recorded by the Khotan monk in the Western Regions Chronicle</note>

> Once, a Western Region scholar named Bimamitadha, known in Chinese as Wugouyou (Undefiled Friend), was a native of Kashmir. He became a monk in the Sarvāstivāda school, excelling in the Lesser Vehicle and gaining renown across the five regions of India. As he was returning to his homeland, he passed by the stupa of the great scholar Vasubandhu. Struck with sorrow, he sighed and said: "The renowned scholar had vast wisdom and elevated virtue, and sought to refine the true doctrine and establish the fundamental teachings of our school. How unfortunate that his life was cut short! I, Undefiled Friend, humbly follow in his footsteps. Though he is gone, his teachings still endure. I shall use my full knowledge to compose treatises that will banish the name of the Greater Vehicle and erase the reputation of Vasubandhu from the entire continent." Having spoken thus, his mind became disturbed and chaotic. His tongue split into five, blood gushed forth, and he knew his end was near. He wrote a letter of repentance, saying: "The teaching of the Greater Vehicle is the ultimate truth within the Buddha's Dharma. Its meaning and words transcend ordinary understanding, and its principles are profound and subtle. In my foolishness, I dared to criticize those who came before me. The karmic retribution is clear—I deserve to lose my life. I warn all students: let this serve as a lesson. Be careful with your intentions and harbor no doubts." As he spoke, the earth trembled, and his life came to an end. At the spot where he died, the ground sank into a pit. At that time, an arhat who witnessed his death lamented: "What a pity! What tragedy! This scholar, driven by his stubborn views, slandered the Greater Vehicle and has now fallen into the Avīci hell."

> A monk from Khotan, Vajrasena by name, also known as "Diamond Army," studied and upheld the Abhidharma-kosha of the Lesser Vehicle. He did not believe in the Greater Vehicle and often engaged in disputes, slandering it. As a result, both his eyes went blind. For over ten years, he remained in darkness, unable to see anything. Later, he heard the teachings of his master Simha-mitra, but could not fully believe them. He was, however, advised to recite the Guanyin Heart Mantra, and with that, both his eyes were restored to perfect clarity. Greatly transformed, he turned his heart toward the Greater Vehicle, renounced the Lesser Vehicle, and embraced the greater path.
