"The Inscription on Faith in Mind" is a work by the Third Patriarch of Chinese Chan Buddhism, Master Sengcan, composed during the Sui Dynasty. Written in a four-character poetic style, it elucidates the core principles of Chan, emphasizing the non-dual dharma gate, the mind free from discrimination, and awakening in the present moment. It guides practitioners to transcend duality and directly perceive their original nature. As an important early Chan text, it laid the theoretical foundation for Chinese Chan Buddhism and profoundly influenced the later Southern School. With its concise language and profound meaning, this inscription is revered as a treasured guide to the heart of Chan, serving as an indispensable classic for the study and practice of Chan.

The ultimate way is not difficult; It simply dislikes picking and choosing. Just have no hatred or love, And it will be perfectly clear.

A hair's breadth of difference, And heaven and earth are set apart. If you want it to appear before you, Do not hold to acceptance or rejection.

When acceptance and rejection contend, This is a sickness of the mind. Not understanding the profound meaning, You labor in vain to quiet thoughts.

Perfect, like the great void, Lacking nothing, having no excess. Truly, it is because of grasping and rejecting That you are not at ease.

Do not chase after conditions, Do not dwell in empty endurance. In a single, even state of mind, All distinctions naturally cease.

To stop movement by returning to stillness, Is to make stillness even more agitated. If you cling to the two extremes, How can you know the one reality?

When the one is not understood, Both sides fail in their function. To reject being is to fall into being; To follow emptiness is to turn against emptiness.

Much talk, much thought, Only leads further from accord. Cease words, cease thoughts, And there is nowhere you cannot penetrate.

Return to the root, attain the essence; Follow the light, lose the source. In a moment of turning the light within, You surpass the emptiness before you.

The emptiness before you undergoes change, All due to false views. There is no need to seek truth; Only cease your views.

Do not dwell in dual views, Take care not to pursue them. The moment there is right and wrong, The mind is lost in confusion.

Duality arises from oneness; But do not cling to oneness either. When not a single thought arises, All phenomena are without fault.

Without fault, without phenomena; Not arising, not mind. When the subject follows the object's extinction, The object sinks along with the subject.

The object exists because of the subject; The subject exists because of the object. If you wish to know these two, They are originally one emptiness.

One emptiness is the same as the two, Together containing all appearances. Not seeing fine or coarse, How can there be partiality?

The great way is broad and open, Neither easy nor difficult. Narrow views, full of doubt, Grow more hurried, more delayed.

To grasp it is to lose the measure; The mind enters a wrong path. Let it go, be natural; Its essence neither comes nor goes.

Follow your nature, merge with the way; Wander free, beyond all trouble. Binding thoughts violate truth; Sinking into dullness is not good.

Not good is to weary the spirit. What use is distant or near? If you wish to enter the one vehicle, Do not hate the six sense-objects.

When the six sense-objects are not hated, They are identical with true enlightenment. The wise do not act; The foolish bind themselves.

The Dharma is not divided; It is false love that makes attachments. To use mind to control mind— Is this not a great mistake?

Delusion creates stillness and turmoil; Awakening has no likes or dislikes. All dualities Are vainly pondered over.

Like dreams, illusions, empty flowers, Why trouble to grasp them? Gain and loss, right and wrong— Let them all go at once.

If the eye does not sleep, All dreams cease by themselves. If the mind makes no distinctions, All phenomena are one suchness.

The one suchness, profound in essence, Is suddenly free from conditions. All phenomena equally observed, Return to their natural state.

When their reasons are extinguished, No comparisons can be made. To stop movement is not to move; Movement stopped is not stillness.

Since the two do not exist, How can the one be? At the ultimate limit, No rules remain.

The mind awakened to equality Ceases all doing. All doubts are purified; Right faith is straightforward.

Nothing is retained, Nothing to remember. Empty, luminous, natural, No effort of mind is needed.

Beyond the realm of thought, Consciousness and emotion cannot fathom it. In the true Dharma-realm, There is no other, no self.

To respond urgently, Just speak of non-duality. Non-duality is all-equal, All-inclusive.

Wise ones of the ten directions All enter this principle. (One thought is ten thousand years; ten thousand years are one thought.) The principle is not brief or prolonged; It is nowhere, yet everywhere.

The ten directions are right before your eyes. The extremely small is the same as the large—deluded boundaries vanish. The extremely large is the same as the small—no edges are seen.

Being is non-being; Non-being is being. If it is not so, You need not hold to it.

One is all; All is one. If you can be like this, What worry about not completing it?

Faith-mind is non-dual; Non-dual is faith-mind. The path of words is cut off; Not past, not future, not present.
