The "Ode to the Diamond Sutra" by Layman Fu of the Liang Dynasty is a poetic commentary on the Diamond Sutra composed by the renowned lay practitioner Fu Xi during the Southern and Northern Dynasties period. Layman Fu, also known as Fu Xi, was a key figure in Chan practice during the Liang Dynasty. He elucidated the profound wisdom of emptiness in the Prajñāpāramitā tradition through accessible poetic verses. The work consists of forty-nine odes, each corresponding to a section of the Diamond Sutra, using poetic language to reveal core teachings such as dependent origination, emptiness, and the mind free from attachment. Blending traditional Chinese culture with Buddhist thought, this text facilitated the spread and understanding of the Diamond Sutra in China. It is regarded as an essential Chan interpretation of the sutra, exerting a profound influence on the sinicization of Buddhism and holding a revered position in both Buddhist literature and philosophy.
