The Buddha Speaks the Eight Auspicious Spirits Mantra Sutra

聞如是：
Thus have I heard:
一時，佛在羅閱祇耆闍崛山中，與千二百五十比丘俱，菩薩千人皆彌勒等。
At one time, the Buddha was in Rajagaha, on Vulture Peak Mountain, together with twelve hundred and fifty monks, and a thousand bodhisattvas, including Maitreya.
佛告賢者舍利弗及諸比丘：「皆一心聽！」
The Buddha addressed the venerable Shariputra and all the monks: "Listen with full attention!"
佛告賢者舍利弗：「東方去是一恒沙，有佛名安隱囑累滿具足王如來、至真、無所著、最正覺，今現在說法，其世界名曰滿所願聚。
The Buddha told the venerable Shariputra: "To the east of here, beyond one Ganges-sand number of worlds, there is a Buddha named Secure Entrustment Fully Complete King Tathagata, Arhat, Unattached, Perfectly Enlightened. He is presently alive and teaching the Dharma. His world is called Fulfilled Vows Gathering.
「去是二恒沙，有佛名紺琉璃具足王如來、無所著、最正覺，今現在說法，其世界名曰慈哀光明。
Two billion Ganges-realms away from here, there is a Buddha named King of Deep Blue Lapis Lazuli, the Fully Accomplished One, the Worthy One, the Supremely Enlightened One. He is presently living and teaching the Dharma, and his world is called Loving Compassion and Radiant Light.
「去是三恒沙，有佛名勸助眾善具足王如來、無所著、最正覺，今現在說法，其世界名曰歡喜快樂。
Beyond these three Ganges-realm Buddha lands, there is a Buddha named Encouraging All Good Qualities and Complete King Tathagata, the Unattached One, the Fully and Perfectly Enlightened One, who is presently teaching the Dharma in a world called Joyful Happiness.
「去是四恒沙，有佛名曰無憂德具足王如來、無所著、最正覺，今現在說法，其世界名曰一切樂入。
Four Ganges' sands away from here, there is a Buddha named Worry-Free Virtue Fully Endowed King Tathagata, the Unattached, the Fully and Perfectly Enlightened One, who is presently teaching the Dharma. His world is called Entering All Joy.
「去是五恒沙，有佛名藥師具足王如來、無所著、最正覺，今現在說法，其世界名曰滿一切珍寶法。
Five Ganges' sands away from there, there is a Buddha named Medicine Master Complete King Tathagata, the Unattached, the Fully and Perfectly Enlightened One, who is presently teaching the Dharma. His world is called Filled with All Precious Treasures Dharma.
「去是六恒沙，有佛名曰蓮華具足王如來、無所著、最正覺，今現在說法，其世界名曰滿香名聞。
Six billion billion sands away from here, there is a Buddha named Lotus Full King Tathagata, the Unattached One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is presently teaching the Dharma. His world is called Full Fragrance Renown.
「去是七恒沙，有佛名算擇合會具足王如來、無所著、最正覺，今現在說法，其世界名曰一切解說音聲遠聞。
Seven Ganges-river sands away from here, there is a Buddha named Calculating and Choosing the Assembly of Complete King, the Attained One, the Supremely Awakened, who is presently teaching the Dharma. His world is called Universal Elucidation of Sound Heard Afar.
「去是八恒沙，有佛名解散一切縛具足王如來、無所著、最正覺，今現在說法，其世界名曰一切解脫。」
Eight billion Ganges-rivers away, there is a Buddha named King of Complete Freedom from All Bonds, the Fully Awakened One, who is now present and teaching the Dharma. His world is called Complete Liberation.
佛告賢者舍利弗：「此諸佛如來、無所著、過四道不受、最正覺，其國土清淨，無五濁、無愛欲、無意垢。若有善男子、善女人，聞此八佛及國土名，受持奉行諷誦，廣為他人解說其義者，終不愚癡，口之所言，無有失誤，相好具足，無所缺減，無央數年不為乏少。
The Buddha told the venerable Shariputra: "These Tathagatas, the Worthy Ones, who have passed beyond the four paths and no longer receive further existence, the Supremely Awakened Ones—their lands are pure, free from the five turbidities, free from craving and desire, free from defilement of mind. If any good man or good woman hears the names of these eight Buddhas and their lands, receives and upholds them, recites them, and broadly explains their meaning to others, they will never be foolish; whatever they say will be free from error; their physical marks will be complete, nothing lacking; and for countless years they will never experience want or scarcity."
「是人終不墮太山地獄、餓鬼、畜生中也，是人終不望取羅漢、辟支佛道而般泥洹，必當逮得無上平等之道，常遇陀隣尼，常行菩薩道，得功德無量。
This person will never fall into the great mountain hells, the realms of hungry ghosts, or the animal realms. This person will never seek to attain the paths of an Arhat or a Pratyekabuddha and pass into nirvana. They will certainly attain the supreme, unequaled path. They will always encounter dharani, always practice the Bodhisattva path, and gain immeasurable merit.
「第一四天王常擁護之，不為縣官所拘錄，不為盜賊所中傷，不為天龍、鬼神所觸嬈，閱叉鬼神、蠱道鬼神、若人、若非人，皆不能害殺得其便也，除其宿命不請。
First, the Four Heavenly Kings will always protect them. They will not be arrested by government officials, not harmed by bandits or thieves, and not troubled by gods, dragons, or spirits. Yakshas, spirit-possessing beings, and sorcerer-spirits, whether human or non-human, will find no opportunity to harm or kill them—except for what is unavoidable due to their past karma.
「若有疾病、水火、烏鳴、惡夢、諸魔所嬈，恐怖衣毛竪時，常當讀是八吉祥神呪經呪之，即得除愈。」
If you face illness, dangers of water or fire, ominous bird calls, bad dreams, or harassment by harmful spirits, and fear makes your hair stand on end, you should always recite this Sutra of the Eight Auspicious Spirit Spells. By reciting it, you will immediately be healed and freed from harm.
是時，佛說偈言：
At that time, the Buddha spoke these verses:
「若有持是經， 八佛國土名，
不墮三惡處， 疾得無上道。
自覺發道意， 見佛即開解，
中外常歡喜， 供養心恭敬。
億劫阿僧祇， 行惡悉消除，
持是八吉祥， 速得明解教。
供事是經者， 千葉華中生，
珍寶為其出， 色像好無上。
人聞是尊經， 尊敬信樂者，
奉持諷誦讀， 清淨無放逸。
女人信是經， 敬慎無諛諂。
棄女為男子， 聰明常黠慧，
奉持八佛名， 出入賊不害。
刀兵水火毒， 諸邪不能干，
愛樂奉是經， 諸魔不得便。
鬼神諸官屬， 無能嬈亂者，
飛行到諸剎， 所在大豐樂。
心意正無邪， 見佛大歡喜，
所生常遇佛， 等心奉事之。
一切眾惡除， 疾得泥洹道，
精進無懈怠， 去離諸緣著。
為人朴直儒， 奉持八佛名，
勇猛降眾魔， 其力如金剛。
端正相好具， 一切莫能當，
布施無慳貪， 巨億萬家生。
盜賊及怨家， 自然皆消除，
疾病縣官事， 烏鳴諸惡夢，
持是八佛名， 呪之即除愈。
奉持是經者， 彌勒菩薩等，
第一四天王， 常共擁護之。
所願皆可得， 踊躍大歡喜，
一心信樂者， 福德亦如是。」
Whoever upholds this sutra, the names of the eight buddha-lands, will not fall into the three evil realms, and will quickly attain the unsurpassed path. They awaken on their own and give rise to the intention for the path; seeing the Buddha, they immediately understand, and both within and without they are always joyful, making offerings with a reverent mind. For a billion kalpas and asaṃkhyeyas, all evil they have done is eliminated; upholding these eight auspicious ones, they quickly gain clear understanding of the teaching. Those who serve and honor this sutra will be born within a thousand-petaled flower; jewels appear for them, and their bodily form is supremely excellent. People who hear this revered sutra, who respect it and have faith and delight in it, who receive, uphold, recite, and read it, become pure and free from heedlessness. If a woman has faith in this sutra, is reverent and careful without flattery or deceit, she will abandon the female form and become a man, intelligent and always wise, upholding the names of the eight buddhas; going out and coming in, bandits will not harm her. Weapons, soldiers, water, fire, and poison, and all evil influences cannot affect her; loving and delighting in upholding this sutra, demons cannot find an opening. Ghosts, spirits, and their retinues cannot harass or disturb such a person; flying to all lands, wherever they are, there is great abundance and joy. Their mind is upright without wickedness; seeing the Buddha, they are greatly joyful; wherever they are born, they always meet the Buddha and serve him with an impartial mind. All evil is removed, and they quickly attain the path of nirvana, diligent without laziness, leaving behind all attachments. Being plain and upright as a person, upholding the names of the eight buddhas, they are brave and mighty, subduing all demons, with strength like diamond. Their upright features and excellent marks are complete, and no one can match them; giving generously without stinginess or greed, they are born into billions of households. Thieves and enemies are naturally eliminated, illness, government troubles, crow cries, and all bad dreams — by upholding the names of these eight buddhas and chanting them, they are immediately removed and healed. Those who uphold this sutra — Maitreya Bodhisattva and others, and the first Four Great Heavenly Kings, always together protect them. All their vows can be fulfilled; leaping with great joy, those who single-mindedly have faith and delight also gain blessings such as these.
爾時，諸菩薩：颰陀和菩薩、羅憐那竭菩薩、橋曰兜菩薩、那羅達菩薩、須深彌菩薩、摩訶須和薩和菩薩、因祗達菩薩、和輪調菩薩，是八人求道已來無央數劫，於今未取佛，願言：「使十方天下、人民皆得佛道。若有急疾，皆當呼我八人名字，即得解脫；壽命欲終時，我八人便當飛往迎逆之。」
At that time, there were these bodhisattvas: Bodhisattva Bhadrapala, Bodhisattva Ratnakara, Bodhisattva Kucumara, Bodhisattva Naradatta, Bodhisattva Sukshma, Bodhisattva Mahasukha-Samgha, Bodhisattva Indradatta, and Bodhisattva Varunaketu. For countless kalpas since they first set out on the path, these eight have still not attained Buddhahood. Their vow was: "May all people throughout the ten directions attain the path to Buddhahood. If anyone faces sudden danger or illness, let them call aloud the names of us eight, and they will immediately gain liberation. When their life is about to end, we eight will fly to welcome and receive them."
諸菩薩彌勒等、第一四天王，皆白佛言：「吾當擁護持八吉祥神呪經者，與我并力令諸疾病皆得除愈。」
Bodhisattvas such as Maitreya, together with the first four Heavenly Kings, all said to the Buddha: "We will protect those who uphold the Sutra of the Eight Auspicious Spirit Spells. Joining our powers together, we will cause all illnesses to be cured."
佛說經已，舍利弗、彌勒菩薩，及諸比丘、天龍、鬼神、阿須倫王，皆大歡喜樂聞。
After the Buddha finished teaching this sutra, Shariputra, Maitreya Bodhisattva, along with all the monks, heavenly beings, dragons, spirits, and the Asura kings, were all filled with great joy, delighted in what they had heard.
