### 巖喚主人

> The Rock Calls Its Master

瑞巖彥和尚。每日自喚主人公。復自應諾。乃云。惺惺著喏。他時異日。莫受人瞞。喏喏。

> Master Ruiyan Yan called out to himself every day, "Master!" and then answered himself, "Yes!" Then he would say, "Stay awake, stay alert! In the future, do not be deceived by others." And again, he answered, "Yes, yes!"

無門曰。瑞巖老子自買自賣。弄出許多神頭鬼面。何故𦗚。一箇喚底。一箇應底。一箇惺惺底。一箇不受人瞞底。認著依前還不是。若也俲他。總是野狐見解。

> Wumen says: Master Ruiyan was buying and selling his own wares, conjuring up all sorts of ghostly faces and divine masks. Why? One calling out, one answering; one alert and aware, one that no one can deceive. Even if you grasp this, it's still not it. If you imitate him, it's all fox's heresy.

頌曰。

> The verse says:

學道之人不識真 只為從前認識神無量劫來生死本 癡人喚作本來人

> Those who study the Way but fail to see truth Only grasp at the “spirit” they knew from youth. This very grasping is the root of birth and death— Yet the deluded call it their true self.
